Kansas Steel Guitar Show

Post by Keith Hilton »

Kansas Steel Show: I had a great time playing the Show Saturday night. Thanks to my band-- Roy Rosetta piano, Johnny Rose guitar, Wayne Florange Drums, Don Tummons Bass. Thanks to Ray Qualls and the crew for inviting me to play again this year. This is one of the best run shows in the Nation. Everyone is super friendly with no politics involved. Just good pickin and good fellowship. Rob Parker, the president of the Keith Hilton fan club, was the announcer. Thanks to Austin Stewart and Jerry Newberry for hooking me up to their sound equipment. Jerry, Austin can blow us both away--we can't carry his case when it comes to pickin steel. I did really enjoy your portion of the show Jerry, especially the tunes you selected. That Mike McGee and Fed Justice play all those difficult tunes and get standing ovations. I'm just a hillbilly picker who plays simple songs. Great show!

Keith, we enjoyed your playing this weekend. I always enjoy getting to visit with Beverly too.

Austin says that nice compliment makes up a little, for you sitting next to him while he tried to pick, but he still owes you one.

Dana, my brother, Tyler, regrets that he didn't get a chance to tell Dalton how good he played on Last Date. With Kyle, Austin, and Dalton, the future looks good.

Thanks Lee, I will tell Dalton for him. I think DJ may have actually enjoyed himself a little this weekend. The ladies in the kitchen spoil him and Norma Jean does too. He likes that attention.

KSGA Steel Show

Post by Paul Sisson »

I can't remember when I've had a better time. It was my first time to meet everyone and I was treated like an old friend. Thanks to Ray, Doug, Lee, Bob, Jerry, and Rooster, for making me come up! It won't be hard at all to convince me next year.

Thanks Charles, we are so glad you and your wife came out to be with us. You are such nice people! I thought of you Sunday, wondering if you were having a good old time picking at church after Dad worked on your equipment. I knew you were excited to try it out.

Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

It was definately a great show! It's always good to see old friends and make new ones. Big thank you to Uncle Rob Parker, the band, Larry,Floyd, Rooster,Bob and of course my 88 keyed hero Roy and big " Atta Boys" to Kyle and Austin on their bass work. Everyone sounded great. ( except for that Henderson character) Teresa and I always love coming to Baxter. Big congratulations to Ray Qualls for becoming the newest member of the Kansas Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. And also to Fred Justice for receiving the Pioneer Award. I don't know who was more surprised! Jerry and Venda I loved your Sunday morning service. It was a beautiful beginning to an excellent day.
See you all next year if not sooner.

I really want to thank the KSGA Advisory Board for nominating me for the Hall of Fame award. It was a total surprise as there are a lot of players out there from Kansas who play a lot better than I, but, there's not anyone out there who loves steel guitar more than I do. This is our 6th year and its an honor to be included along with Scotty Henderson, Curt Shoemaker, the late Jimmy Powell, Doyle Huff and Jeff Newman. Wow, I'm humbled.
It was a great show and there were so many great players there and we had several here for the first time and they excelled beyond belief. Thanks to everyone, the players, the band, the kitchen ladies, the distributors and many, many more who helped. It was a great "Family Reunion". See you all next year, Ray

Ray Qualls and the guys and gals did it again! I don't know where on this earth you could feel more welcome than the Baxter Springs and Siloam Springs shows. They are the highlights of our year! It was sure good to have Roy and Barbara there. I'm sure they felt right at home. My, my, the many long hours that the piano player and the drummer had to work their arms, I can't imagine doing that all day and night, but they sure didn't sag any. They were an integral part of the band. We sure appreciate the invitation to be back next year. And if we're still alive and Jesus hasn't returned, we'll certainly plan on being there.

I wish to apologize to Ray and the club for my not being there but I have been very sick and still am with the worse cold I can remember. I hope I am invited back next year. I don't think I have ever missed a Baxter Springs show before this one. It seems I missed a real good show.

Well Jerry and I had a GREAT time this weekend also. I am so VERY GLAD that Roy and Barbara got to be with us. Thanks to all the band for a wonderful job. I think this was the biggest and best show so far!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats to Ray and Fred. Well deserved.

Keith, Thanks for your comments about Jerry's part of the show. Also we are Very proud of Austin. His steel playing and also the job he is doing on the bass. Thanks to Bob Dell for his part in getting Austin started on that and for letting him play so much this weekend. Also thanks to the players that let Austin play bass with them.

I would like to add my thanks to Ray,Lee and the K.S.G.A. staff for inviting me to play on the show. And all the ladies that provide the great food, along with Randy Stewart for bringing his cooker and doing a super job of cooking up the burgers and franks. This was a very fun show with several of the best steel players you well ever hear. As Ray stated in an earlier post, its just like a big family reunion where we can get together with old friends and meet some new friends. I'm all ready looking forward to next year.
Our sincere thanks to all: Clovis & Vivian

Great Time At the KSGA Route 66 Show

Post by Bobby DeMoss »

Hey Ray, Lee and Austin, thanks so much for the invite and letting us play on the show. The hospitality is awesome and everyone is friendly down there. We all had a great time. I second the motion of your show being the best run show around. The guys in our Middle Creek Opry band are ready to come back with me next year for sure. And Ray, I got the bar and pick pouch last night from the better half, thanks so much and it's a good thing my head is sewn on tight. See ya all next year or maybe before.

I want to thank the KSGA for the Pioneer Award they gave me, what a surprise that was!!
Thanks to the back up band, GREAT JOB guys.
Thanks to the gals and guys working the kitchen this year, you took real good care of me. :D
Also thank you to everyone that came by my booth, and a special thanks to those that bought something. You saved yourself from me coming to your house and eating all your food for a few weeks. The money was well spent on GAS!!!
All in all a great show again and I'm already planning for next years trip. :D

Hi Bill, wish you could have been with us, but fishing with the grandchildren is always important. I got one piece of cherry cobbler and I think Lee ate the rest of it. ;-)

Bobby, we were so glad to have you and the Middle Creek guys come and play for us. You put on a great show! We look forward to next year. As for leaving your picks, you must have gotten to close to Austin. That boy loses his picks at least once a day.

A hearty Amen to the above posts,
I am back home now..for a day or so..
Mr Ray,the KSGA staff, and volunteers did another super job, in promoting, and delivering to the fans, another great show..packed with great music, super good food, and visiting, and meeting friends, and making new ones.
My thanks to each and every one of you that came, and supported the efforts of this club.Everyone did a splendid job. The ladies, and men who worked in the food preparation, and serving, had their hands full..and had to work very hard to perform the many jobs they performed, and were busy as bees most of the time.
And Mr Randy, thank you for your effort, and expense of pulling your cooker down again, to cook the things on the cooker.
Kudos to all..and I won't try to name everyone, but the pickers did a fantastic job with their music. And Mr Dalton played two solos, to add to the show..great job..
The staff band was on top of their game, and played tirelessly to support the players..I hope they are back next year..and I hope it works out that Mr Roy and Miss Barbara can return. He is the "creme'dela creme" of the piano players.
And congratulations to Mr Ray, and Mr Fred for their award recognition.. and I know they each deserve the awards..
The club is already working on next years show, so start making plans...it will be here before you know it...
Thank you again, and I appreciate the invite, and I am looking forward to coming back again..
Peace to all of you....
RP...'come on in'...
