HSGA Joliet 2008 - Roll Call - Steakhouse reservations?
So, who's going to be at the HSGA convention next week?
Al's Steakhouse vs. Syls?
Al's is cheaper, Syls is better. My vote... Syls - but not on Thursday night - that's when I give my beginning C6 workshop.

That said ...
I will "blindly" follow the lead of the great ... Howard Ah Sol ... on this issue

Be sure to let me know where you guys will be going so I can go to the other place. I don't want to get stuck with the tab again this year. All them $25.00 steaks & fancy booze drinks bankrupted me.

Steak ?
What's with all the talk about steak?
You can get a steak just about anywhere.
I thought the Chicago area was known for Pizza? Are there any good Chicago pizza places near the Convention?

Chicago has a long and celebrated history of being a "meat" town. Hence the steakhouse tradition.
You could also try a traditional style Chicago Hot Dog.
From Wikipedia:
Chicago-style hot dog is a steamed or boiled all-beef hot dog on a poppy seed bun, which originated in the U.S. city of Chicago, Illinois. The hot dog is topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (usually a dyed neon green variety called "Nuclear Relish"), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt; sometimes, but not always, cucumber slices; but never ketchup.
The complete assembly is sometimes called "dragged through the garden" because of the unique combination of condiments. It is taboo to put ketchup on a Chicago hot dog; some hot dog stands don't even stock the condiment.

This is Howard's shy way of making a motion and also wanting to be diplomatic in order to avoid hurting any one's feelings. I am impressed with this high degree of sensitivity!
But his subliminal message is "I want to make a motion to go to Syl's."
Therefore, I second the motion of Howard!!!!
Aloha,
Don

The food is better at Syls.
Syl's is not an all-you-can-eat buffet like Al's... but the food is markedly better.
With restaurants, pretty much most of the time it's worth paying more money and not having to eat all you can.

And let's not forget the intelligent, informative and insightful tableside converstation that inevitably occurs after the fourth drink.
As to your previous post Howard, I seem to recall a photo of Rick Aiello at Syl's Steakhouse with some rib bones he was considering using as tone bars.

Syl's vs Al's
Darrell, you're on the ball. Spelled "portiLLo's" but pronounced "portEEyo's"
Don Kona,- you don't want to go to Syl's when your favorite place is the Cracker Barrel where you can get "biskets & graby" w/grits cheap.
Harold AhSol,-Where did you ever see a bone in prime rib? I've never ever seen a bone in prime rib. The best prime rib I've had lately was just last week at The English Inn in Door County, WI (14 oz.$22.95). Cut it with a fork! Delicious !
See ya'll at Syl's in a few days.
Wally
P.S. Still have 2 half hour spots for pre-luau music. Any volunteers or suggestions? Time is running out.
