Buddy Alan Owens. . . . .Buck's Son
Does anyone know if Buddy Alan is still performing. I was watching some old Hee Haw clips with him. He looked like a young Buck Owens.

Buddy does, in fact, still
perform at Buck's "Crystal
Palace" in Bakersfield,
California. He has a couple
of dates booked with the
Buckaroos there coming up
in October.

I believe Bonnie is Buddy's mother. Acccording to Wikipedia entries, she and Buck were married in 1951--- the right vintage for Buddy. She didn't marry Merle until around 1965. Buck's 2nd marraige-- to that gal who played fiddle-- only lasted days and that would have been in the Hee Haw era.

Buddy Owens...Still Working!
I had the pleasure of playing guitar behind Buddy (Allen) Owens Aug. 16 in Carthidge (SP?) Texas, 2008 as Buck Owens was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, and although he was suffering allergies, and was hoarse (SP?) he did his best, and would have made his daddy proud. He said he still works some and is thinking along the lines of making a new recording. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met.
It was a dream come true to get to play the Don Rich tone, and licks since I grew up idolizing Don, Buck, and the rest of the Buckaroos. I may never get that chance again, and tho I feel there are better guitar players in the area that could have done the job, I was knocked out to be asked to play. The steel player was the great Ronnie Miller from the Charley pride band. The bass player, was the one and only Tony Booth, and the Drummer was my great friend and closest neighbor, Danny Adams. We didn't have a fiddle on the band. Buddy did some of Bucks biggest hits, and It was a lot of fun.
Another highlight was the fact that when the Whites were inducted, Leon Rhodes was on guitar, and Weldon Myrick was on steel. Ralph Emeory was the M.C. Also going into the hall of fame that night was songwriter Mickey Newberry.
Steve Hall and Shotgun Red were there along with Steve's band. What a night!

Why should you have to sound like your dad,
Its even harder when your dad was a reknowened individual, that always quirks me a bit when people say;
He dident sound anything like his dad.
I know, it's just the way it is, oh well!!

I think it was intended as description not comparison...
I think there are a lot of folks who read this Section of the SGF who do not know what Buddy Owens and Dean Miller sound like. I don't think the statement you quoted was intended as a negative comment. It will help those who do not know what these two talented men, Buddy and Dean, sound like. Some folks might be seeking a different interpretation of there Fathers' great old tunes.Larry Bressington wrote: He dident sound anything like his dad;duuuuuuuuuu
I usually skip shows were the performers are striving to sound like any one of my old Faves.

Thanks john, you were right, there was not supposed to be a negative tone to that, other than the frustration one feels as an artist, when they are exspected to sound like their counterpart. I am not saying that this is the case with these two gentlemen, but i am sure i caught a glimps of that somewhere.Once again i went off on my own tangent, remembering when i saw Byron Whitman perform with slim, and hearing all the comments outside the colston hall saying; 'ooh, he dient sound anything like his dad as we exspected'
I think Hank JR went through hell with that also. My appologies if it came off wrong, I never was a politician!

No need for an apology to me, My Friend. I was just pointing to a different potential perspective. I like inventiveness and creativity. I've never felt that kinda' frustration because I would take any similar statements directed at me as complimentary.
I've been "asked out" of a number of cover bands because I refuse to be a radio. I don't even like "quoting" myself let alone anyone else!

I honestly believe that Hank Jr. suffered self-induced pressure as much as he felt pressured by the A&R folks. I think he understandably wanted to recreate the Father who he never really knew, and that is just "Mission Impossible". (I know, I was raised by my GrandFather, too.)
Its all good, Young Man!!! Its all good!

Gentlemen, thank you so much for the civility of this thread. Often these discussions go in the other direction.
I played with Buddy Allen (Owens) off and on during the 70's. I agree that he was a very nice man and I doubt that has changed. At that time, his contract stipulated that he do a certain number of Buck songs every show. He indicated that was a source of some frustration. I truly hope he gets a chance to climb the mountain on his own terms.

Thanks for reminding me about Buddy Allen, glad to hear he is still at it.
Back in the 70s, Buck Owens sure did have the world on a string with HEE-HAW and all those great recordings. He also had a pretty darn good talent agency with many of the HEE-HAW artists represented.
I got to back up several of them at fairs, rodeos and other events. Buddy Alen, Susan Raye, Luanda Lindsey, and about a half dozen more. They all had to perform Buck Owens songs in their shows along with their own [hit] records. None of them traveled with their own bands as I recall but backing them up was a cinch. I mean Above and Beyond (The Call Of Love) sounds pretty much the same no matter what key you play it in.

It's spelled "Alan". . . .not "Allen". I checked the Crystal Palace Website to confirm this. Also heres a You-Tube of Buddy singing with the Buckaroos in case you'd like to see it!

I saw Buddy last month. He showed up at a Darrell McCall gig I was playing way out in Voca, Texas. He had had a gig himself that night in Llano, so when he got done he came to visit. He got up and sang a few songs and it was a real treat. He is a very nice man....
