"Girl On The Billboard" video

Post by Michael Douchette »

I dig this! I think it's a cool remake of ol' Del's classic...

I just saw it on GAC, and had to look it up.

Yeah - I like it. To my tastes, it's a nice update on a classic tune. It has some rock and roll sensibility, but there's no question it's the classic country song.

I'm waiting for the first gripe about the Les Paul and torn jeans. ;)

Nice Beatle-sounding-riff, good country vocals---Great take on an old favorite.

Cool! What do you call those backwards modulations? Modulations? It amazes me when singers can hit those lows and still have quality in their voice. I like it.

Like Conway's "I'd Love To Lay You Down." Yes, they're just modulations.

One of my favorite tunes. Right up there with, "One Piece at a Time," "Smoke that Cigarette," and "I've been everywhere."

One thing wrong with the video is, that's not the right scenery between Chicago and St. Louis. :\ ;-)

That's Kenny Greer playing the Fender steel in the video. Kenny played on all the Red Rider stuff (Lunatic Fringe, etc.) and many more Canadian classics:

I watched a TV special on the Roadhammers and I wasn't impressed. Just a bunch of contemporary musicians paying tribute to a bygone era and theme in country music.

The lead singer, Jason McCoy, is a solo country singer here in Canada. The other singer didn't have a career until the Road Hammers. I find them a bit image-driven, but their sound isn't too bad. Jason was a pretty clean-cut guy before growing out the beard to suit the Road Hammers image. They have a reality show, which works against their credibility a bit.

Steel player Ken Greer is the real deal, spending 30-odd years on the road here in Canada and abroad. This is just one of several high-profile gigs he has happening.

I really wished that Del were alive to see it. I expect that he'd be extremely flattered.

So bluegrass bands the world over need to give it up, Since Bill and Lester are dead?

Hmmm. How is this bad - contemporary musicians doing a high-quality tribute to a cool old country song by a fine singer who's not here anymore? I don't think the dead ones can do this anymore. I think contemporary is about the only choice. :aside:

Yeah, my sentiments precisely. Same thing with blues, jazz, and maybe we should tell Dale Watson that there's just no point in going on.
I find them a bit image-driven, but their sound isn't too bad. Jason was a pretty clean-cut guy before growing out the beard to suit the Road Hammers image. They have a reality show, which works against their credibility a bit.
Well - they wanna be big stars so they have no choice but to let someone fluff up their image for the teenyboppers. Didn't know about the reality show, which is just as well. I try to just listen to the music and assess it on its own merits.

You know the first band whose stage persona really made me want to throw up? The Beatles. It took me a couple of years to get over that and really listen to the music - which, on the merits, was definitely worth listening to. But "I Want To Hold Your Hand" in front of tens of thousands of screaming pre-pubescent girls? No way, Jose.

I'm still waiting for the first gripe about the torn jeans. C'mon guys - somebody must be dying to rip them up. Let's see what happens if they ever get on the Opry. ;)

No they don't. I just don't like the Roadhammers' rendition of a bunch of songs I grew up listening to. I like Jerry Reed's version of 'Eastbound And Down' much better than the Roadhammers' version.

I liked it..I like the fact they put their own touch to the song and made it fit what is selling in todays market..Also without altering or burying the songs former identity...Well done and very entertaining...Loved the modulations up and down and rides taken by all.

I wonder who plays steel on the studio version (the one we are hearing in the video)? Kenny Greer, the steeler in the video, is not really a country player, and that's not his sound.

I looked on allmusic.com and Russ Pahl is credited with banjo and guitar, but I know he's a steeler too. Maybe it's him? Just a semi-educated guess.

It could be Russ. I recently did a gig with an Alberta songwriter named Rob Russell whose album had Russ on pedal steel and guitar. (I had to learn Russ' licks, which was a great pelasure). So maybe there is a connection there studio-wise or producer-wise. Maybe Russ is the go-to guy for high-budget Canadian recordings.

i loved the video...it's best to see bands when they're not hampered by having to actually play..scraggly t-shirts and jeans are what i like to wear and especially really cool bent up cowboy hats...i think the video could only be improved by having kid rock sitting in with another les paul, cause that's country..that's what i'm talkin' about...yeehaw!!!

hope that works for you, dave!
