LJE: re Fuzzy Owen's book ??

Post by GaryHoetker »

Hi LJ:

I read in a previous posting of yours that Fuzzy is writing a book about the Bakersfield/Calfornia Country sound. He represents what was the most exciting era in country music and is certainly qualified to write about it. I hope there will be a lot about the honky-tonks, Wynn Stewart and all the great side musicians. I look forward to reading it.

Thanks.

I'm a Bakersfield boy-born and raised, and grew up watching Cousin Herb's Trading Post TV show. Bill Woods, Billy Mize, Jelly Sanders, Fuzzy and Bonnie Owens, were all regulars on the show. It was great family fun and a wonderful era. Fuzzy was my favorite.

When Bonnie passed away a few years ago, I decided to attend her funeral. Well, the local newspaper gave the wrong time for the service. Apparently, they corrected it the next day but I didn't notice. By the time I arrived at the chapel, the service was over. It was still pretty full with friends and admirers. I found a seat and said a prayer for Bonnie. After awhile, I got up to leave and noticed a man standing by himself. Right away, I knew it was my man Fuzzy. He came over and said hi and shook my hand. He didn't know me from Adam. But that kind gesture by him meant a lot to me.

Hello Gary, you hit the nail on the head about that Bakersfield - Family. I loved all of them and still do. Everybody you said and a whole lot more you didn't from that town was great to me in my young Musician days.I did many session and club gig's in that little big town of Bakersfield,California and also a gig a few time in Bakersfield,Texas too! My home base gig was " Freddie's Top of The Hill ". I had the Band, " CRAWFISH " there for about 2 1/2 years and off and on at others. The roots of my raise in Country Music from Buck Owens/Merle Haggard/Billy Mize/Fuzzy Owens/ Red Simpson/Lawton Jiles/Bill Woods/Cousin Herb/ Oscar Wittington/Mayf Nutter and many, many more from that town gave me what I needed for free to be what I am as a Musicians, Pride and Respect. Sincerely in Country Music & all Styles,Leo J.Eiffert,Jr.

Freddie's Top of the Hill was a popular place. Who were the bandmembers in CRAWFISH??

Do you remember a steel player by the name of Frankie Hardcastle who was in Lewis Talley's band. If so, do you know his whereabouts?

Hello Gary,The Band memebers of The Crawfish Band was Big Billy Garner on Lead Guitar & Vocal,Leon Copass on Bass Guitar & Vocal & myself on Drums & Vocal. As for " Frankie Hardcastle ", I don't know what happen to him. But,I'll ask my good friend " Lawton Jiles ", being he was talking about him the other day and many others from Bakersfield that played with him (Lawton)also. That's where I remember the name, from Lawton. Soon as I find out I'll you know on Frankie. LJ
