Lloyd Green In Vintage Guitar Magazine

Post by robert kramer »

There is a great profile on Lloyd Green by Rich Kienzle in the current issue (September 2008) of Vintage Guitar Magazine. This write up is one of the most extensive articles on any steel player I've ever read and details Lloyd's career, his guitars & amps and includes many not before seen photographs. (Lloyd's LDG, Dobro, Twin/Speaker Set-Up and Sho-Pro are in color) Here is the VGM web site, in case the magazine does not hit your local newstand:

I saw both threads and went looking for it today; the bookstore I went to still had the August issue and didn't have September yet. I'll be going back to find it though!

Thanks to both of you for the heads up...

Wonder if this will serve to drive up the prices on LDGs once the (non steel player) collectors "discover" them.

Rich Kienzle knows his stuff. Great author. "Southwest Shuffle" is recommended.

Just finished the excellent article. One thing that stuck out was that he wished he still had his Sho-Bud Crossover model which remains his favorite.
Maybe the Crossover model will gain some new respect?

Great article, thanks for the tip, Bob and John; well worth the trouble to find.

A lot of insight into how recordings were done in the 60's and 70's (great stuff on "Little Darlin" records) and the insider "politics" of the music business, then and now...

Lloyd also has some interesting things to say about how he feels that the musically interesting things going on in Nashville now are more in the "Americana" and/or "alternative country" areas, and how "Music Row" seems to be oblivous to that.

Everyone needs to get a copy
of this VG magazine.
Lloyd never looked better.
He has a memory like a steel trap.
I've talked with him several times
and he has excellent recall of session
work, producers, arrangements...etc.
Don't you wish he would write a book :D

I made a special pilgrimage to Borders on Charing Cross Road, but they only had the August issue.

I think Lloyd's got better hair than the cover star.

I just got the issue this weekend, it's a great and amazingly long article. Rich Kienzle is always a great writer, thanks, Rich, for covering steel players all these decades.

Got mine at Barnes & Noble in Torrance, btw.

Gene O'Neil was the steel player on "Kiss An Angel Good Morning." Gene was Charlie Pride's road player at the time.

Picked mine up yesterday. What a great article about a great player and human being. Some very telling remarks about Lloyd's feelings about today's "country" music. It is so cool to get inside info from the legends of our instrument.
Mullen RP D10, Peavey NV112, Hilton volume. Hound Dog reso. Piles of other stuff.

I just read the article. It was great to see such a detailed documentary on a steeler in a six stringer's publication.
