HELP! And some permissions, please........

Post by C Dixon »

Over the years I have downloaded 100's of pictures on this forum and ebaY. In addition, I have been sent 100's of photos of a myriad of steel guitars including pedal steel guitars.

I have just written a book on the Steel Guitar. And I wish to use a select number of photos I have in my "pictures" file in my PC.

Sadly, I do not know where some of them came from.

If you are the owner of any of the following pictures, would you please give me permission to use them. Also, if you did not take the picture, I must get permission from the person(s) who did. There are strict copyright laws concerning this, and the last thing I want is to be sued over this.

For any that give me permission, I will be soo appreciative and I will, of course, give a courtesy under the picture to all who grant me the "permission".

Please make the permission "statement" as legal sounding as you can. IE, Not simply "OK". I am not sure that would satisfy the law.

I am certain that some of these were from guitars auctioned on ebaY. I just don't know which ones. :(

I believe that pictures on ebaY unless otherwise noted, become public domain. NOT sure though.

Thank you in advance for this. And may Jesus bless you for you help.

Here are the pictures I have not as yet gotten permission to use.

The steel player with the MulitKord steel was taken in late 47 or early 48, The player is "Doug (Slim)Seymour". I was with him when he bought this guitar from a lady in Jamestown NY. The amount was $115.00.
Doug is a reader of this forum, lives in western NY state and still very active in steel guitar.

I'm sure you can get his permission to do what you wish with this picture.

Carl, I wish you the very best on this ambitious project.

Your friend,

Thank you sooo much Bobbe. I shall get in touch with him post haste.

Also, dear friend, I have not as yet received your "permissions". I sent you the papers to sign and adressed the envelope "private and confidential" in care of you, as soon as I hung up the phone, the day we discussed it.

Did you not get it dear brother?

love ya friend,

Carl, I'm making my reservation right now for one of the first copies of your book, which I'm predicting will be an amazing piece of work... not a big stretch considering the author and his inspiration! :)

Always great to hear from you, dear friend, whether privately or publicly. God bless.

The Jerry Byrd Master of Touch and Tone picture is the CD cover from Mountain Apple. By an amazing coincidence, I happen to be pulling this CD into my computer right now, and have the jewel case in front of me. It says that the photo was taken by Jon De Mello. Jon is the son of famed Hawaiian music producer Jack de Mello and CEO of Mountain Apple Company.

You can probably contact him through their web site at www.mountainapplecompany.com.

The first picture is of my 60s Fender 800 to which I added 6 knee levers just because it seemed like a good idea. Feel free to do what you will with that picture. Somewhere in the annals of this forum I tell the story of how I did it in some detail. I have more pix of that ax as well which you are also very welcome to. -MJ-

My sincere thanks to Bobbe Seymour, Herb Steiner, Al Marcus, Fred Shannon, b0b, Michael Johnstone, c c Johnson, and James Brown.

This is a great help to me. I can't tell you all how much I appreciate this.

With people suing people for the slightest infractions real (or imagined) any more, one has to be careful.

And Yes I have put those down who have requested the book.

I love you all, and may Jesus protect and comfort you always,

Ooooops

I forgot something.

I have two pictures I would love to include in the book. I copied them from Steel Guitar World magazine.

If anyone knows how I can get a hold of Russ Rask, PLEASE let me know. I really want to use those photos. But I have been unsuccesful in reaching him.

Thanks

Permission to use photo

Post by Jerry Fleming »

Hi Carl,

I am the owner of the Marlen. I took that photo and you are welcome to use it. A little bit of history on that guitar. That was the last D10 built by Marlen and I had the honor of playing it at my dear friend Leonard Stadler's funeral.

Kind Regards,

Thank you Jerry.

I am delighted that I have heard from all who have identified the pictures I posted. And all so far have given me permission to use the pictures in the book.

I cannot tell you what this means. I have about 95% of all the permissions I need to go forward with the copyright before I seek a publisher. I am excited.

Thanks every one again.

May Jesus bless each of you for your kindness,

c.

I am pretty sure that ebay photos as well as text are the copyright of the person who created the auction. Pretty sure that they are not public domain.

They have it set up this way so people can't steal each other's photos and descriptions.

Even if it was posted on ebay, it may not have had permission to be there, and could belong to a 3rd party. Best to make sure you aren't going to get bit with anything that comes from there.

Just my .02 cents. Congrats on the book.

Carl,

Great to see this post and hear of the book!! I too can't wait to get a copy. I am the owner of the Remington pedal steel as well as the photo. You're more than welcome to do with it as you wish. In fact, I'd be more than happy to send you a better picture. The guitar is actually a blue lacquer.

Please send me a PM with your email address if you would like to have a better pic from the front.

kindest regards,

Oh Dave,

Thank you soooo much. I would love to have another picture, but there is a major problem now. ALL the photo/page formatting is complete.

And this stupid wordprocessor that came with my PC is soooo dumb that if you make single change to a photo after it has been formatted for the page, it tends to mess up other pages. GRRRRRR! And I have found this takes an inordinate amount of time to correct. I hate it >:-)

But thank you much for the permission and thank you for understanding dear person.

And thanks for asking for a copy of the book.

As we speak, the actual publishing of the book is delayed. Here is what I am doing:

1. I MUST first get ALL permissions to use photos. This involves federal law, and I do NOT want to take any chances here. Sadly, some are not as cooperative as others. So I am having some problems in this area, sadly. One is a major PSG manufacturer I hate to say.

2. Then after I have all the permissions in writing, I have to get the book copyrighted. Not sure how to go about this and I am all ears to anyone that can advise me here.

and Lastly,

3. I need to seek a publisher. And if am a greenhorn on getting a copyright, I am 10 times worse off when it comes to publising a book :D

So any help here would be very appreciated.

Thanks again dear friend,

carl

Carl,
It's not too complicated to register your copyright.
All you have to do is mail a copy of the manuscript with a completed Short Form TX and a check for $45.00 payable to "Register Of Copyrights" - to this address:

Library of Congress
Copyright Office
101 Independence Avenue, S.E.
Washington, D.C. 20559-6000

All the info you need is here:
http://www.copyright.gov/register/literary.html

As far as publishing goes, you might be well advised to publish and market it yourself.
All you'd have to do is pay a professional printer to make up a few hundred copies for you and then advertise it here on the forum.
If you try to get an actual book publishing deal - you might be in for a lot of headaches.

I'll send you this in an email for your convenience.

There is now the option of printing-on-demand. You cut a deal with a company that does this and orders go to them (either via snail mail or email) and then when they receive an order with payment, they actually print one copy of the book and ship it out to the buyer. No inventory. That's another relatively low-cost option that doesn't involve peddling your book to publishers who will wonder exactly how many people care about steel guitar in the world...

Good luck with the project, Carl.

Carl, if you decide to go the self-publishing print-on-demand route, I'd be more than willing to provide the layout & design work (including image enhancement), if you haven't had that done already. Absolutely no charge, it would be a labor of love (graphic design is my business, so I actually know what I'm doing  ).
