I suppose this is akin to an electric bass in a bluegrass band

I think around in the 70's used to see a few of them being played quite a lot,Can't recall the names of them right now[can hardly remember what I had for supper]But seems there several hit songs with them on the records.DYKBC.

I still hear what sounds like an electric sitar in many new tunes although it could be a sitar bar on a steel.
The TSOP session band from Sigma Sound in Philly used one regularly on the soul hits of the 70-80's. The Stylistics, Delphonics, and many more great groups recorded there.
Vinnie Bell invented the Bellzoukie (an electric 12 string) the electric sitar and other cool stuff at the Danelectro compnay in north jersey.
The original's were made by Danelectro and it looks like Rogue is making them now.
