I really like the songs on the CD with one exception.
It's the one about building a house with no door.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me and really isn't much of a song. They must have been hard up to find a song to fill out the CD. :whoa:

The best tunes on the album are The shuffle and the Duet with Dean Dillon.

Russ beat me to it, but Paul's 12-bar solo on "River of Love" is great. He does a cool lick in the chorus using the 1st string raise also.

This album is exactly what his last CD should've been; 4 songs less and much more to the point. Glad I bought it.

Personally I don't feel George's material or albums as a whole are near as solid as they used to be at all. He needs Jimmy Bowen back to help him produce and pick his stuff. The last good albums with Tony brown were Pure Country,Lead On,and Blue Clear Sky.

Klye,
"River of Love" would be a good choice for his next release! :)

I've bought every George Strait album since day One - and this one is the first I've passed on. I've thought about it for a while - but always thought, that the next one will be better. But not so. Five so so tunes, but not a monster. I agree, that the shuffle is best cut. The duet with Patty Loveless could have been a winner - but what a clumsey written song (and production). I really think, Strait need a new producer and maybe another label. Could I instead recommend the comeback album from Tony Booth. Now here's some great Country Music.

Per,
You may be right about changing producers.

Although, George has just had his 56 #1 single off the new Troubador CD. "I Saw God Today"

George is still a great singer & puts out great country music! :)

His next single should be "When You're In Love" or "Make Her Fall In Love With Me Song"

I also think that he needs to re-record "Amarillo by Morning" with his voice as it's matured. I think It might go #1 now. But it needs all the old musicians he used to use on sessions, and he needs Buddy on Steel!

I'm as big a fan of Mr. Emmons as there is, but it seems to me that whatever one might think of George Strait's more recent albums (I think they're pretty consistently good myself) it sure doesn't seem the quality of the steel playing is ever a problem! There's always some great stuff on each album I've heard...

HI My name is Bo Borland and I am a certified George Strait junkie. No that that's out of the way,
I think this album is much different than his usual offering.
I noticed that some of it was cut at Buffets Shrimp Boat Studio in the Fla Keys where the last one was cut. I am wondering if these new tunes were leftovers from that session and were passed over when George chose the tunes for "It Just Comes Natural" I think the "Natural" cd is very good, loaded with great playing by Paul & the rest.(Who are the rest of those guys anyway and why do they play over Paul all the time)
I don't like it as much as "Natural" or "Somewhere Down In Texas" (which may be his best yet).
I agree that "Make Her Fall In Love With Me Song" should be the next single.

I'm not just after a few good songs,I'm talking all 10 or 12. I remember when his albums were great front to back. Not something you get anymore.

As far as steel players go,nothing against Paul, but if you listen to the albums Holding My Own ,Pure Country,or Lead On you definately notice a big difference. George is great with Paul, but with Buddy he's AWESOME!

I'm disappointed in the SONGS on this CD, very weak, hardly any good stories in the lyrics. Paul is great as always, but it even seems like he's sleepwalking through this album. It Just Comes Natural was absolutely great, I play it over and over.

Up and down in quality just seems to be a pattern with George, probably due to the producer in charge.

George still sings great, one of the best voices in country no matter what song he's singing. And I think he's getting better with age.

As far as "It Just Comes Natural" there were about 4 or 5 songs on that that I liked. Didn't care for the rest. Last album overall to be great was "George Strait" the self titled one from 2000. I think you're all being too generous with your comments.

Kent,
I started this thread and ask for opinions on it. I must say,
I didn't expect such criticism about song choice or players on "Troubador". Everyone has opinions, I certainly do too! :) Anyway,

George to me has stayed pretty consist throughout his career. He is Country in comparison, to so many you all dislike on todays radio. He is the real deal!

George has been loyal to a fault. He uses some of the same songwriters on each CD and musicians and he's used his band. I'm happy he's still at the top of his career. 56 #1's not to shabby! :)
Congratulations...I'll always support that.

Theresa,

You're correct in your statement about George. 56 #1's more than any other artist. I was speaking more on his overall albums. We all have opinions. I guess I'm not in the majority on this topic. Nothing against Paul either. I enjoy his playing as well. Just happen to be a big Buddy fan. My favorite album of George's is still "Ocean Front Property" to me this album was the pinacle of his carrier, and Paul did play on that one.

God Bless ;-)

Sometimes I like to put on an old cassette tape of George's early recordings.

I believe his voice has matured and mellowed over the years but, I believe, some of the emotion is missing from his delivery.

I'm glad country radio still likes what he puts out.
#1 "I Saw God Today" on the country countdown. :)
Go George! :)
