Tom Russell Band - Lost Angels of Lyon

Post by Greg Simmons »

I finally had a minute to have a listen to this new live album from 1989 - and y'all, it is the shizzle...

My introduction to Tom's music 20 or so years ago was during this incarnation of the Tom Russell Band - Tom, Andy Hardin, Fats Kaplin (who plays some very sweet steel, as well as accordion and fiddle) and the killer rhythm section of Billy Troiani on bass and Charles Calderola on drums.

This set - recorded May 18, 1989 in Lyon, France - nails it with 17 tracks of vintage TRB :D

like the gal says in the show intro..."le meilleur honky-tonk band du monde" 8)

oh yeah, Tom's blog is always a great read too:

Tom's the real deal. First couple of times I saw him was in Toronto in the late 80's with the full band. On one of those occasions they were opening for Ian Tyson, which made for a fun evening.

I think Dave Letterman called Tom "the best songwriter you've never heard of". Since Townes is gone, Tom may be the best songwriter working today.... period.
