I've seen another clip where Welk himself introduces this as "a new GOSPEL song"!! (Well, they do sing, 'Sweet Jesus'! :whoa: )

So, that tells me that he had them sing it at least twice on his show.

Interestingly, these clips are posted at YouTube by none other than Tom Shipley himself, who searched high and low (no pun intended) to find them for years. He and Mike Brewer are just laughing their butts off that Welk and company could be soooo naive...!

Disco square dance, anybody? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMuObcMwGxA

Yeah, some of this stuff is pretty kitschy. But you know - none of this takes anything away from the level of musicianship of Welk's band.

Yeah, and some of them had to know what this was about, and thought it was so funny they couldn't bear to tell ole Larry.

Yes, Welk's band was always top notch. You also have to realize that he was running a variety show... something unheard of nowadays. Back then it was natural to have a TV program that had a little bit for everybody.

Nowadays everybody bitches if what they're listening to doesn't have 100% of the content they expect...

I stop being the crotchety old codger now..

What's really funny is Myron coughing when he was introducing the act. Sounds like he was in the green room doing a little tokin' himself.

This is where I get embarassed for caucasians. Even as as a kid I knew those people had no soul. Totally devoid! I doubt that anyone on that show knew what that song was about or else it would have never been on there. There is a pedal steel in the background though. Oh my gawwwwwwwwwed! Get off the stage! Right now!

I kept trying to figure out who the heck was singing in that group? Could you tell? :?

Man, that must've been Welk's idea of 'slumming' it.

Nobody was singing on that Welk video Donny posted, 'cause the audio was dubbed. Here's what they were really playing: Chicken Polka
