A Way To Survive - TAKE 2 ;-) Leavitt Tuning MP3

Post by Doug Beaumier »

Bill Hatcher’s great version of "A Way to Survive" played on the Leavitt tuning, 8-string, got me excited, so I decided to record a version on 6-string lap steel, Leavitt tuning. Ah! the joys of 6 strings!

I’m tuned 3 half steps low because I retuned from E6 and I didn’t want to break any strings.

Great job Doug! You would have never known that was a six string. Your tone is right on.

Keep them coming!

Theres something about the sound of a non pedal steel when it's played well and in tune that I love. This is great to hear two completely different approaches to the same song with the same tuning. Love it.

A Way To Survive/ Non Pedal

Post by Bernie Gonyea »

:whoa:  :-D

Doug: My first visit to the Non-Pedal Section of the Forum's Index. I had just finished hearing buddy's Pedal version on Walt Shetner's web page.
But, I have to admit; I loved your playing as much as I did Buddy's. Whom would have believed that it was being done on a Six string guitar; Beautiful,Doug. I would love to hear Bill's eight string now, of the same tune. I started my musical career on a six string Carvin back in 1953.. Jerry Byrd was my all time Idol. But I definitely enjoy your playing a great deal..Keep them coming.. Thanks for sharing it with us..Bernie :-D

Bernie, Thank you so much for your kind words. I am humbled! Like you, I have been a huge Jerry Byrd fan for years, and of course a Buddy Emmons fan too. I had most of their albums back in the day, wore them out, and then tranferred them to cassette, and wore those out. Now I have hundreds of JB and BE tunes on my iPod and I still listen to them a couple of times a week. I never get tired of hearing these two great players. Thank you again, and Happy New Year.
