Date Watson

Post by Leslie Ehrlich »

I went to the YouTube site to look for some videos of Dale Watson just for curiosity's sake. I've read a lot of praise for him from die-hard country pickers on the SGF, so I thought I'd check him out. Here's my take on Dale.

First, Dale is not a whiner. He's not like Hank Sr. or Conway. He gives me the impression that he likes the more up-tempo stuff. He does the Johnny Cash and western swing type stuff really well.

Dale can also play rock. I found a video of him doing a tune that sounded like 'Hot Rod Lincoln'. He's a pretty good guitar picker too.

He's good baritone, and he doesn't sing with a Southern drawl like so many 'new country' singers do.

I didn't pay much attention to the presence of pedal steel in his music, but I will say that it is there and it fits in with what he does.

One thing about Dale is a lot of his shows are at local clubs, not some gigantic stage show. So you can go see him up close, not like some concert where there is some guy singing surrounded by a wall of security. Dale gets real energized especially when audience is laughing at his jokes and stories, then he knows he is playing to a crowd that is his kind of people (people that wouldn't get caught dead at a Kenny Chesney concert).

Hope you got to see some of the Dale Watson videos I posted on youtube under user name kcsteeler.

Dale grows on you. He is a genuine country and western hillbilly singer in the classic genre. Good song writer also. He's the real deal.

Dale has done a great DVD (For fans only, I think it's called) with LOTS and LOTS of top notch steel by Ricky Davis. Also, his double live CD "Preachin to the choir" is as good as it gets. The steel is really in-your-face loud, just as it should be.

I have another live DVD of his, with just a trio - drums, bass and Dale himself. Surprisingly, that works too, thanks to Dale's Telecaster chops. Dale is 100% real country - compared to him, even Marty Stuart would be considered middle-of-the-road. ;-)

Saw him at the Mercy Lounge in Nashville last week. We need more like him. Great songwriter. Great show. His tribute to Johnny Cash (Runaway Train) is over the top. It's not just about Johnny, it's about every one of us.I never heard him before, but he's got a new fan here.

I've played steel for Dale many times on his sojourn through California, and yes, he's the real deal. He had a way of getting the best performance out of you, maybe because you felt he loved it (steel) so much ....
