Lace pickup??

Well, my items didn't sell on Fleabay, so no new dobro for me.

How many have tried the Lace pickup that just sticks to your dobro with sticky tape?

I'm thinkin that may be what I have to do if I want a pickup on my goldtone mahogany laminate. I have an award session preamp I could use, and go through my Acoustasonic JR acoustic amp, then into the board. Reckon I could get a decent tone with that hookup?

How much do the Lace pickups cost? I have enough to buy a Fishman, but Tony (pick n slide) from fleabay, said the Fishman's were junk. He talked like the Lace would be the better of the two. I know nothin about the different pickups, so I'd appreciate ya'lls help. Thanks

I have the thin line Lace on my johnson metal body (AXL).

I imported to Australia direct from the US, it was about us$120 on ebay and arrived here in under a week. I also fitted a volume control into the body and an output jack rather than hanging it off the strap hook.

I love the tone from it through my Fender Deluxe. A friend of mine who gigs as a solo act heard mine and immediately ordered one to replace the fishman in his identical guitar.

I have a Lace pickup on my National Model D dobro. It works great. It's user friendly and very affordable.

I doubt Jerry would use junk.... Seems like a world-class player like Jerry Douglas would use the LACE if it was the best?

I trust Jerry's judgement and ears over some guy at a music store on E bay trying to make a buck..

I had a Lace mounted on my Regal and liked it very much.
My new Goldtone has the Fishman mounted by the factory and although it's nice.
For me it does not sound as nice as the Lace in my Regal did. Also it needs a pre-amp to add any punch to it.

I had a fishman in mine terry, and the difference is night and day. I took mine out and perma mounted my lace.

Jerry douglas also mics for solos, and can budget his own sound people.

I think I'll try the Lace.
But I got to know the lenght, width , and height to make sure it will fit on my Goldtone.
anybody know right off hand the deminsions?(sp)
BTW> you can still play a dobro acoustically, with a Lace installed can't you?

yes you can, the lace interferes in no way with the acoustics. I used to have it entirely on the outside of the body, and in the studio simply took off the tape and set the pickup aside. The problem I had was that at shows, having the jack just hanging off the strap lock eventually caused the wire to short. I re soldered it and zip tied the jack to cover plate. looked funny but worked fine. I recently took my fishman out as it wasn't doing me any good to have it, and I swear I get a little more volume acoustically now that it is off the bridge post screw. I put the lace jack down through the screen hole and into the hole where the fishman jack was. I mount the pickup with Scotch heavy duty mounting tape in between the neck and the coverplate. I dont have any problems getting the adhesive off the finish, but my guitar gets beat up from all the touring and stagework so I dont really worry about it. If you are worried about the finish of your instrument, you may want to research an acid free adhesive, but just changing the tape every 2 or 3 months before it chemically alters to much should limit its permanence.I wouldn't put this on a 30's vintage dobro, but I wouldn't be trying to amp one either.It fits in between the screens, and has more string clearance than I need (I use two strips of the tape to give me the height I need, which is about 3/16 from the thin strings, and 1/8 from the base strings. I was going to get a cheap dobro and route it out for an electric guitar pickup, keeping the national for studio work, but since it doesn't alter the acoustic sound I am very happy with it. Drawbacks? I like bronze string sound, but they dont work well with magnetic pickups. Nickel or steel strings make it very loud and clear with low feedback.If someone tells me how, I can post how my pickup sounds. Later today I will go and measure it for the dimensions, but it about the size of a tele neck position pickup inside the mounting screws. gotta catch my breath now..

last thing,,lace they has a new reso pickup that is supposed to be more balanced. I have not heard it tho.

Thanks for the link Don and Steve. Steve, I've already orderd the regular Lace sensor model,
but I really didn't have the money for the thin model anyway.
Have these pickups got to be a certain distance from the strings?

Terry and others who asked, Here are the Dimensions and specs:

Installed height including the mounting tape is approimately 3/8" (9.53mm). Includes 30" (762.00mm) shielded cable with endpin attachment loop and inline 1/4" (6.35mm) jack. The pickup is 2-3/4" (69.85mm) long and 21/32" (16.67mm) wide. 4.1K ohms.

Jerry Douglas sounds great amplified, but he also has the Fishman Aura preamp with some custom made models that were designed specifically for his guitar and the pickup. This will be available for mere mortals at some point (rumor has it that it will be available by the Winter NAMM show in January). Normally (without this Aura preamp) the Fishman makes the dobro sound like a B*&^%$jo, and a particularly bad B(*&^%jo at that. I think it's unusable.

The Lace dobro pickup doesn't particularly sound like a dobro, but it's very feedback resistant and doesn't sound bad. In combination with a mike, it's a good choice when you need to play in a really loud live situation.

I recorded some samples for Terry but couldn't figure out how post them for everyone. I use a Dobro to add the dobro back into mine. What I want to experiment with is having an instrument mic nearby, so when I have a solo I can have stack the sounds
