Colin Raye Concert...No Steel

Post by Bill Dobkins »

I did security tonite for the Colin Raye concert at our county fair. He had Bass, drums, keyborad and lead guitar with him on rythm. He did a hour show with no oncore,no autograph's. Did some of his hits but mostly did Chuck Berry songs. All in all it was OK but wasn't to country.

Colin was country when he started. I worked a gig with him about 15 years ago. He had a steel player picking a Sierra , his brother Sammy who used to work in the area with Big or Wide Country, played bass... out of Virginia I think. How did Colins hair look? Back then he was getting thin, but had a smoking hot young hippy type chick with him . He fronted the band .. never touched a guitar. He was very good. back then ..

His hair was short, like its always been.He had his daughter do a couple songs with him. He was upset with the band because someone hit a 4 chord insted of a 5 . One of my gaurds at the back of the stage heard him tell the band in a not so pleasent manor to get on the bus now. the band came back out and packed up and they left.

I prefer not to see any act that does not carry a steel player. I did see a Gospel group last month that did not carry a steel player. The Florida Boys had been singing as a group for more than 50 years and were retiring so it was a piece of history for me. I personally would not go see Coiln Rare if he were across the street from my house and especially after hearing he acted the way he did. It is poor judgement to talk to any employee in a demeaning tomne in front of other people. Just totally uncalled for.

When I saw him about 18 or 20 years ago, he was a lounge singer in Reno doing top 40 pop and rock songs. I never heard him sing anything close to country back then.

Sounds like Colin is not dealing very well with his irrelevance in today's world ....

I know he had a steel player when I worked with him about 10 years ago. Not sure if it was Van, but whoever it was was playing a Sierra.
"not dealing well with his irrelevance" ... ouch!!

I've known Van since the early 80's when he was playing with Ira Allen. Colin Raye played out of Portland OR and would play up here in Seattle sometimes with two of his brothers. The Wray Brothers. He dropped the "W" and added the "E" after he got his contract. He had known Van from Reno and offered him the steel job. I heard a couple of months back from a friend that Van left the band and is driving band tour buses. And ironically probably making more money. I'm sure Van is who you would've seen playing the white Sierra. Van is also a hot guitar picker and singer.
