Jim Collins song

Post by Keith Murrow »

In the late 1980's, an AM country radio station here played a song for a few weeks by Jim Collins that I believe was titled "I Want To Be a Cowboy 'Til I Die" or something very similar. Even back then, I couldn't find a copy.

The chorus went something like:

"Well you've never seen Roy Rogers cry
Or hear the woman he loved say goodbye
Or watch him ride off in the sunset alone
Well you've never heard of Randolph Scott
Drinkin' doubles dropping quarters in the jukebox
Cause everything he did just turned out right
That's why I want to be a cowboy 'til I die."

I may have mangled these lyrics, but I think they're at least close to this.

I thought maybe in this day and age of the internet, I'd be able to find information and maybe a copy of this song, but I have not yet.

Does anyone remember this song, or possibly know the album title it was on?

As far as I can tell, this song was never on an album...45 only. It's rarity hints that it may have never been released. The link above will let you purchase an audition or "DJ" copy of the record.

Thanks so much, Donnie! I got it ordered so it looks like I'm set.

I very much appreciate the help, I had never been to that web site before.

This isn't very helpful I suppose, but I heard this song this week, on our new local country radio station CHVR (96.7 fm). They play alot of cool old stuff, and unlike alot of radio stations, they're not above playing some vinyl (you can hear the hiss sometimes).
It's a tradeoff, as sometimes they make funny little mistakes - they announce one tune and then play another, or play a 45 at 33, or vice versa. They even managed to play something backwards last week, but it's still a very welcome relief from the homogenized crap radio that all the other stations have become.
I'm sure it'll be played again, and I'll listen closer this time.
