How's that for wierd?

Post by Dave Boothroyd »

It's a long story, but I did a spot today, opening the show at a Rock and Metal festival. It's called Chickenstock, and it happens on a farm about a mile away from where we live.
I was playing an acoustic(ish) set on Guitar and Mandolin, mostly my songs, but a bit of Dylan and one actual Folk song- because I had been billed as a folkie.
As I was tuning up, a bunch of people from the audience came up and asked me if I was doing and Johnny Cash or Kenny Rogers songs.
Here's a picture of me on stage.

Now why would they think I would be doing a Country Set?
Does my Steel Playerishness show that obviously?
I sang them a quick couple of verses of "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" (all I could remember- I last sang that about 1978!), and they went away happy, and I went back to being a folkie.
Wierd!

Cheers
Dave

I dunno - my rockabilly band used to get hounded for covers of Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" - just a bunch of frat guys who thought it was kitsch, I think. As far as Johnny Cash goes, I think he completely transcends country. The rockabilly band played at least 5-6 Cash tunes every night, and I've done them in blues, bluegrass, folk-rock, acoustic folk, and hard rock bands as well as country bands.

"Steel Playerishness ".....

Has a new steel term just been created? :)
