Chord chart for Sunday Kind of Love?

Post by Tommy Allison »

Looking for a chord chart for Sunday Kind of Love. The group I'm working with wants to do it. I'm not a blues or jazz player but, I sure do like this song.

Here's a link to the Etta James, Jo Stafford tune. I can't guarantee it's accuracy though. Maybe someone else will have a simpler, better formatted chart....or maybe you can find a chart for the Reba McEntire cut somewhere online.

Jerry, thanks for the reply. Yeah, it's the Reba version that our female vocalist wants to do. I tried playing along with the CD but, wasn't having much luck finding some of those passing chords. Again, thanks for the help. I'll transpose these chords to the key of C and see what happens.

It's a really beautiful progression. I used to back up a singer that did it. I don't know where I stashed the chart, though. I'll try to find it at home tonight.

Bob, sorry it's taken so long for me to respond but, my father is in the hospital and that's where I've spent most of my time for the last couple of days. Yeah, it's a very nice song and a welcome respite from songs like Kerosene, Crazy X-Girlfriend, and some of the other material our group is doing these days. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated and thank you very much for replying to this thread.

Good luck. 8)

Bob, thank you very much. I have a CD of Reba McEntire's version so the melody's no problem, I'm just not used to this type of chord progression. I really like the song and it will be a good learning experience as well. Again, thank you for the help.

The progression's very cool as standards go. I love the climatic chord of the bridge (Db7#9 on the word "lover"). It's the pedal 8 chord on C6th, at the 4th fret if you're in F like the chart.

On E9th, I would play the 3 defining notes of Db7#9 on strings 9, 6 and 5 at the 3rd fret with pedal A. Let the bass player handle the root and 5th.

C7#5 is C augmented with the b7 added - another cool chord. Sometimes written as C7+. In jazz, it's common to add the b7 note to an augmented chord, or to raise the 5th note on a 7th chord to give it a more leading feel.

For example in the key of C:
[tab]chord notes
G7 G B D F
G7+ G B D# F
C G C E [/tab]
Notice how the D note in the G chord walks chromatically up to the E in the resolution. This is a very common technique in jazz progressions.

If you use the F lever on your E9th for 7th chords, you can easily augment them to be 7#5 chords with the B pedal. The C7#9 in this progression would be at the 11th fret with B+F pedals,

Again, sorry about the delay in responding to your reply as I've spent the majority of my time at the hospital this week due to my father's illness. As a matter of fact, I'll be going there just as soon as I hit submit. The good news is, if the procedure goes well this afternoon, he should be discharged either tomorrow or Sunday. I very much appreciate the additional information. I took the liberty of printing it out for future reference.

Tommy, I found Reba's version in the key of C. What a great tune both lyrically and musically. Hope it helps. http://www.cifras.com.br/cifra-teclado/ ... nd-of-love

Jerry, this is very helpful. We are learning the song from Reba's version in the key of C. I just got started transposing this afternoon and the way things have been hectic around here this chart will save me considerable time and effort. thank you very much. Tommy

Those chords look really wrong to me. I don't think that Reba's version was really that "dumbed down", was it? :?

b0b's right

Post by Jerry Overstreet »

Yeah, you are correct b0b. I shoulda read through the changes before I posted the link. I just saw the chart was in the key Tommy was looking for and didn't examine it at all

I can clearly see now that many changes are omitted or wrong.
Tommy, please ignore that chart :!:

The plot thickens. I checked my e-mail just before heading out for a gig last evening and found this latest chart. I didn't have time to take a close look at it so, I printed it out quick like and took it with me to give to the band leader. I did notice however, that the 1 to 1#dim. was missing but didn't think much of it. Oh well, I've got three chord charts to work with, I should be able to come up with something. Thanks to all who replied to this topic and thank you Bob for providing us with the Steel Guitar Forum where we have the opportunity to share informatiom.

Tommy, sorry for any confusion my latest chart may have caused you and your band. I know that online arrangements are often flawed and should've verified it before posting. Looks like you'll figure it out though. Best of Luck :!:

Jerry, no apology necessary. I appreciate your effort. Yeah, I can usually find my way around the more common chords and progressions but, I have virtually no experience with blues or jazz. But, at 60 years of age and the second time around on pedal steel, I find my mind (or what's left of it) to be much more open than when I was younger and "wiser". I find myself trying and doing things I would never have thought possible just a few short years ago. Our female vocalist just celebrated her 20th birthday at our gig last night. Just the fact that someone that young wants to do this kind of material makes me think, maybe the future of music might not be so bleak after all.
