Mahavishnu-Fury Alert!

Post by David Mason »

I just found out that AbstractLogix is carry a reissue of the old Mahavishnu Orchestra songbook, for 22 smackers. Since the originals are going for upwards of $150, this is handy. It's written out by Johnny Mac himself in score form, with the guitar, violin, keyboard, bass and drums all stacked up there.

Except, when it comes to the solos it says, "improvise." Oh, oooh-kay....

Also McLaughlin is mixing the long-suppressed tapes from the Trio of Doom for release soon. This was a one-shot concert by Jaco Pastorius, Tony Williams and McLaughlin in Cuba in 1979 as some cultural exchange thing, but the tapes had been locked up in some legal wrangling till now. :!: The mind boggles....

For better or worse, it'll be interesting to hear this long talked about gig.
But, the later studio 'interaction' between Tony and Jaco would be just as amusing.

Imagine what could have been, if Jaco had kept his cool in Havana.

I saw Jaco with Weather Report in LA before I'd heard of him anywhere else, and he's someone you never forget.

Ooo ooo OOOO! And might I add, OOOO! I can't wait to hear the Trio of Doom. I don't much go for the fusion these days, but Jaco was once my hero.

When I was in High School I went to see Weather Report in Ann Arbor, MI. They were touring for the "Procession" album, which I didn't have yet.

I was young, I was all geared up to see Jaco play. So, out come W.R., and I'm looking up at the stage...thinking..."huh, I didn't think Jaco was a young black guy...uh, waitaminnit, he's NOT a young black guy...who IS THAT!!! What, no Jaco!!!"

Needless to say, I was disappointed, but as Jaco's replacement was Victor Bailey, I was only a little tiny bit disappointed. The Victor Bailey/Omar Hakim rhythm section was great.
