YouTube deletions...?

I've had a number of YouTube clips in my 'bookmarks', but was dismayed to find yesterday that they had been removed (for copyright infringements).

One was James Taylor on GMA ('Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas') and another was - and this was a REAL disaster - Emmylou with James Burton & co doing 'Amarillo' on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' in, I think, 1976.

IF ONLY I'd known how to download and save these things - I was always half-expecting that the axe would fall!

Has there been some news about this that I've missed?

As soon as Google bought YouTube a couple months ago they started deleting files. There were rumors that is it was going to happen and Google jumped on it right away as soon as they took ownership. I guess to make a good impression on someone.

I lost the Johnny Cash video of Folsom Prison Blues with Dale Watson playing the prisoner.

Yes, it's sad to see them go, but they belong to someone else.

Very similar to Napster, or The Record Lady, and many others.

I quite agree, Joey. It is frustrating, though - there's no way of buying some of this stuff.

Working for some of the companies whose licensed product has been posted without a reference to the source, I'm not exactly bummed out by this.

However, it has been a great resource for checking out old clips and performances.

Roger, check out "vdownloader" to save youtube and google vids. Hope this helps you. I've been using it about 6 weeks now and it works great, download and save whatever I want.

Here is a link to the downloader--works like a charm. You have to follow the links to download the .flv player to play them. Also, when you download them, you need to rename them and add the .flv extension to the end of the name...

John, check out the vdownloader I previously posted. Its simpler to use and you can use Windows Media player to play the vids. Basically when you open vdownloader,add the url from youtube and copy, its that simple.

I think the RIAA and the recording labels are really shooting themselves in the foot. A good example is the recent removal of the Gary Stewart videos. Gary was a hitmaker for a several years and a great stylist. The only way for new people to be exposed to his work was the random viewings on "utoob". Me, I could care less - I've already got all of Gary's stuff on record and tape. You never hear him on any radio stations anymore, and I can't imagine future royalty payments on his recordings amounting to more than $20 a year. If his stuff was up on "utoob", it would at least get some exposure, and maybe people would want to hear more and go looking online to purchase it. As it stands now, he'll soon be a forgotten name, literally wiped from the slate of country music because no one will ever again be exposed to his work.

Stupid move! Really, really stupid.

Maybe that's what the labels want? Forget the "back-catalog", get rid of all the "good ol' stuff", and then the only choice for consumers will be the tripe they try to pass off today as "country music".

I laugh at them, I really do.

Martin Luther King's great "I Have A Dream" speech was recently copyrighted. Before that happened, it was regularly re-broadcast and reprinted, especially on Martin Luther King Day. Now, you'll probably never hear the whole speech in it's entirety again.

I heard the whole thing live - the day he gave it.

Oh, and there weren't any admission charges that day, either!

In speeches, as well as in song...sometimes the message is more important than the money.

At least...it used to be.

I think that the major recording companies and their monetary support structure (like, Clear Channel radio stations) are DEEPLY freaked out by their plummeting profits. The notion that they can't just buff up a hot new star-boy or star-chickee, plop them out on the market and people will lap them up like cream is deeply disturbing - the price of fuel for the Learjet has getting ridiculous, and Jr. needs a new Ferrari....

Whether it's explicit or not, suppressing any alternative sources of music and entertainment is an obvious way to try to force disobedient consumers back to the feeding trough. It will probably even work to some extent, though I'm so stingy and addled I'd just as soon listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan than buy John Mayer's "blues" album, I like Janis better than Joss Stone & I'm not sure the world really needed any more metal bands after Led Zeppelin.

The whole core of the new "Vista" operating system is to support and maintain digital rights management.

Folks it gets much worse than just
pre-emptive copyright violation deletions.

ALL of Youtube has been blocked by the

Ministery Of Information Technology, here in Thailand.

because ONE clip is said to be Lese Majesty,
or derogatory or insulting to the King.

If such laws were enforced in England, all of
Fleetstreet would be working from prison to a man!

Now I think the King is a great man,
and don't like him insulted either,
but it is totally incompetant to block
a whole site like You tube,
because they can not figure out how to block
ONE VIDEO CLIP...

Seems when this was commonly known 50,000 people viewed it,
and totally lambasted the creator in their comments.

I can still see the Joe Pass Roy Clark video,
because it is on video.google.com.
But youtube is non loading.

I am not sure if any clip from youtube a
dding site PHP will work, etc,
but the front page just don't load no mo.

just a heads up

If you,we, me, are listing video's with a song title in the MAIN TITLE you can be sure at some point it will probably be removed.
