Who played lead on Waylon's "Only Daddy..."

Post by Bill Cutright »

No guesses, please.

I've ruled out Waylon and Chet (but those are my own hunches - Waylon played guitar, and probably fairly competently, but, every time I seen him playin, he was thumb swaggin it, and the tonality of the solo has too much attack - Chet coulda played it, but it sounds Tele'ish (at least Fenderish) and I just doubt it's him). It's Burtonesque in some ways (it has a sort of "Workin Man Blues" harmonic simplicity and the dominant 7th repitition), but, I don't know if he was hangin around studio B much in those days (, yet). Plus, there was probably a half a dozen other guys that could have done it.

Anyone know???

Could it have been the same one who did the pickin' in "These Boots are Made for Walking", by Nancy Sinatra?

Bill, I'm not sure who played lead on it, but I seem to recall hearing that Jimmy Bryant actually wrote the song. We all know what a Tele player he was......may have been him on the session.

Michael, I've often wondered the same thing!! Actually, I've been curious about several of the late sixties early seventies cuts (uptempo numbers). The songs I'm thinking about definitely "ain't" Waylon (absolutely no disrespect intended). Stylistically way different to my ears... and a lot cleaner. Reminds me a little of Ray Flacke, but the time line isn't even close for it to be him. I'll be interested to find out because I've always been curious about this.

I'm pretty sure Gregg or Theresa Galbraith would have the definitive answer on this... IF they see the thread...

I just e-mailed him the link... we'll see...

The lead guitarist on "Only Daddy," by Waylon was Fred Carter, Jr., Deana Carter's father. I believe at one time he own Nugget Studios in Hendersonville, TN.

Nugget wasn't in Hendersonville... it was out toward Springfield, off of Springfield Hwy... I used to work out there a lot... I remember Deana on the swingset...

Lloyd just called me, he was looking at this thread, and he wanted me to pass along that it was definitely Wayne Moss, without question. So, now we know.

Thanks, Lloyd!

Marty Stuart owns the guitar that was used on that track. He calls it "Wayne", and it's a early '60 Fender Jazzmaster.

"Wayne"
(from Guitar Player Magazine - August 1994)
One of Marty's most prized recent acquisitions, this early '60s Fender Jazzmaster was owned by Wayne Moss who used it to record "Pretty Woman" with Roy Orbison, "Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line" with Waylon Jennings and "Almost Persuaded" with David Houston. The custom Olympic white finish makes this guitar cooler than cool."

Jimmy B. owns the song legally. He did not write it.A man named Jim Alley actually wrote the song and traded Jimmy B. the song for some session work.Jim A. also recorded it before Waylon. I've tried to find Jim A. but

Tommy mentioned that Jimmy Bryant (Ivy J. Bryant) wrote the song which really isn't true. The first recording of the song was made in the SoCal area by a local musician/singer by the name of Jim Alley. Jim's original 45rpm record had his name under the title as writer. He later did a record session which Jimmy Bryant either paid for or played on and took title of his pick of the songs. He took "Only Daddy", so in truth, Jimmy Bryant "owned" the song but didn't write one word of it. In Jim Alley's original he used the line "I'm gonna hit you on the head with a pan of cornbread, if you had any sense you'd quit" instead of the line Waylon used "You keep steppin' out of line and messin' with my mind". Jim worked a little on bass with us when I was in the Johnny McKnight band in the late sixties.....JH in Va.

Did the original recording use that famous guitar lick?... or was that to come later on Waylons version?
Thx,

This bunch just amazes me sometimes. All of us Nashville guys who are HERE and KNOW that it was Wayne that played the lead, and have stated so, and some guy from halfway across the world that has no clue chimes in with his little bell of doubt...

I gotta admit, though... the CZ's you guys make are the best irons in the world, IMHO...

IMO Wayne did one of best James Burton style solos I ever heard. For many years I actually thought it was James....JH in Va.

Thanks Michael,
now I know who was playing. I never doubted, only didn't read the posts carefully.

And now, here is the song to listen:

Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line (Waylon Jennings, 1968)

I remember hearing Jimmy Bryant claiming that he was the writer, when he was doing the jams with Curly in the Hall of Fame Motor Inn in Nashville in the late 70's (the ones I was at were nights to be remembered!). Never knew till today that he wasn't the real writer.
