12 string
What is the advantagee of a 12 string steel. Is it just personal choice. I understand that this will give yo two lower bass notes? Then is it an octave from the 12th string to the firsr as it is from the first fret to the 12th?

Thanks
I appreciate your reply. Doesn't E9 have have two octaves across the neck before the 12th fret. there is a B at 10 and 5 a G# at 3 and 6 If you rase the second 2 steps wouldn't that be another octave

10-string E9 does not have two octaves. You can't raise the G# on string 3 further than A. In terms of roots, 10-string E9 has only one octave of E roots (strings 4 and 8 ) with a 3rd on top and a 5th on bottom. C6 has two full octaves, C root to root (strings 3, 7, 10), but the bottom octave is not a full C chord, which eliminates power chords down there. 12-string extended E9, gives a full two octaves E root to root (strings 4, 8, 12) and is good for power chords. A 12-string universal, actually has three extra strings, and gives you a 5th below the bottom root. Most important, the uni is the only one that gives you two plus octaves of the C#m chord you get with the A pedal. That's one of the reasons I prefer it.

My 12 string E9/B6 Universal 12 string not only contains the entire B6 tuning, but on the E0 side I have an octave and a half of extra bass, all the way down to low A, a fifth below the low S string on a guitar. Plus I've also got the bass note for the E chord, and by lowering my 11th string down to C# on 2 knee levers, the bass notes for the C# and the C# minor chord positions.

A while ago I got interested in the E9th extended, 12 string tuning. I like the idea of the two lower strings. However, I have been playing 10 string for sooooooo long, I just couldn't get used to the feel of the neck.
I'm sure if I would have stuck to it a bit longer I could have gotten used to it but I figured my time would be better spent on sharpening up my chops on C6th.
