No David, you have it backwards. Just intonation (JI) is based on multiplying frequencies by ratios of small, whole numbers. It is not "tempered".

Equal temperament (ET) multiplies each pitch by the 12th root of two to get the next pitch. Do it 12 times and you reach the magic mutiple of 2:1. The octave is the only place where JI and ET match up.

For example, consider A=440 Hz.
The E above it in JI is 440 * 3/2 = 660 Hz.
In ET, the E is 440 * 2^(7/12) = 659.2 Hz (approx).

JI is the natural harmony. ET is the man-made one.

I have been playing a Javanese Gamelan only this week, and it is as close to an JI pentatonic scale as any beat counting I can do can get it.

Cheers!

Why does man have to think that he is so great. We are but a spec of dust in the universe!

Why does man have to think that he is so great.
Don, maybe some do
.... maybe some don't.

But postulating if:

God is Great
God is ALL things including the universe
We are a part of the universe,
then we must also be great.

If not as men or as individuals, then as part of the whole.

I had thought the beat frequency of the universe was 7 cps,
but recently they measured the background radiation and found 4.5 cps.
So it seems all calculations based before that were wrong.
We still be learning.

Go figure.

I once in the 70-80's created a musical piece based on multiples of 7, to see where it would lead.
"John Cage on qualudes" was one comment...
Not for most ears but an interesting excercise.

CB, I WISH the meds would work, I would hate to miss the Irish Festival because the ear is too bad to fly with.
And 3 weeks of fevers is no fun either.
Hope your bugs getting better too.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 03 October 2004 at 11:30 AM.]
