well, I don't know a lot about the Dixie Chicks, never bought a CD by them. But, on the Asleep at the wheel CD Ride with Bob, they do a great job on Roly Poly. The best of any Nashville artist on the CD. Ray Benson and The Wheel--really great. Al

Gosh, I hadn't thought of it quite like that. Maybe they are history. Image

It's a matter of scale, no pun intended. The Dixie Chick incident is minor compared to Hanoi Jane. Good point though, Jimbo, I never forgot about her crap. Despite that, I do own a copy of "On Golden Pond", but that I bought for her dad and Kattie Hepburn. Image

I seriously doubt the Chicks will be laying low. There have already been benefits, and they have always been upstarts anyway, having told just about anyone in the music business who tried to modify their sound to shove it, including MTV, VH-1, (both wanted fiddle, banjo, and steel free mixes. They didn't get them) and also their label, who opposed their artistic direction but buckled when a lawsuit threatened that they might have to open their books and reveal how much money they are stealing from their artists. The label let them go, and now they run the whole show themselves. Sales dipped for their latest CD, since they didn't have big label push behind it, but their earnings went up fivefold. (this despite the "contraversy' over the remarks, which doesn't appear to have much in the way of legs) They have a huge spotlight, a massive soapbox, and a monster audience that appears to agree with their politics. As was stated above, their tour was just about the only one that routinely sold out the big arenas this year. They outsold The Eagles in Denver, and it was much the same elsewhere. They still get airplay, they're still selling records, and they're still selling tickets.

Get used to it-they're gonna be around for a long time. And so will their politics.

If the Chicks want to talk politics, then mavbe they should quit music and go into politics,if they want to play music,SHUT UP and play,if I wanted their opinion on world events I would ask for it...But they can play darn good country and blue grass if the powers to be would let'em... Image

I agree with you all the way, up 'till this point. I really think their sales dip was directly proportional to their comment.

Good thing we still have Shania and Faith to keep country music alive.

The weirdest thing about this thread to me is that the last Cd the Dixie Chicks did was a freakin bluegrass album for the most part. They weren't trying to make some market survey driven product like most of current country musics pathetic roster. Those women have balls. They most likely just don't feel like standing in the new country ass kissing line any more. They don't have too.

Yes Jim I think it would have been better. Better recieved? can't say. But think about it what was the first thing artist of all genre's did after 911.. they wrote and sang songs about it. Whether you realize it or not as musicians music is an expression of souls whether we write songs or play steel guitar. It's just what we do. and how we tell the world what we're feeling. Toby kieth wrote "angry american" lota people loved it lot hated it but he didn't write as much for approval as he did it to tell the world he was proud of his country and more importantly the men who defended it .(including his father) that's his right! and yeah he took flack from some canadian(peter jennings) but his fans they understood and so do true chicks fans. but again don't wine and say country owes apologies..express yourself with what you do not with the power you think you have because of what you do. Stars/singers are not gods. (steel players maybe hhahahaha)
your CD is a grat expression of who you are.( heard you at the fessy booth)but does the at give you certain political clout? i dunno.
just my opinion( sincerely I like your work man)

J B Arnold - two very good 'posts'! I'm in total agreement.

The Chick's CD and concert ticket sales probably owe a fraction of a percent to the so-called 'real country fan', some of whom inhabit this Forum.

I think they're great! No, I don't particularly want to hear Natalie's political views, but it doesn't concern me if she wants to express them, either.

For the record, I think that Alan Jackson professing his ignorance of the 'difference in Iraq and Iran' is deplorable, although the song has some merit, which is more than can be said for the appalling 'kick their ***' sentiment expressed in that cacaphonous Toby Keith record. That is just ugly.

I'm happy that the Dixie Chicks are here to stay - they sound terrific....

Freedom of speech and of opinion is a wonderful thing. But don't you guys have anything better to do with your time? Get a life, gentlemen. Fire up your amps, make some good music and let sleeping chicks lie.

Jim Ives -

So far today, I've played eighteen holes of golf, played a matinee show on steel, came home and practised, expressed some views on a public forum and, once I've eaten dinner, I'll be off to the theatre to play again this evening.

My efforts may not rival those of the great humanitarians of this world, but I feel as though I have a reasonably satisfying and rewarding life - how's yours?

Since the Chicks are leaving country music, I wonder what style they will take up? Pop is a very broad genre and has many sub-genres, so it's not clear to me what they'll do. Remember, their roots are Texas country, and they play acoustic guitar, dobro, slide, and fiddle. Not a lot of that in pop. Remember also that in Shania's dual mixes, they mix those instruments out of the pop versions and replace them with something else.

On a more general note, I think we all want the artists whose music we appreciate to share our own ideologies. Since there tends to be a strong element of patriotism amongst many country fans, it's no wonder Natalie's original un-patriotic sounding comment left so many mad at her. She shouldn't have been surprised, though. I guess the girls didn't know their own audience, or at least not the sensitivity of the nerve they were hitting.

They are a very talented and driven lot. They'll do well wherever they go.

JB A. is right on the mark. As well as others, but JB was partiqularly clear.
____
Next.If they did a "protest song", it would likely get more exposure and for MUCH longer than one on-stage remark.

That said, it would ALSO be heard everywhere, not just in the USA.
So I find the arguement that they said it on foreign soil irrelevant. It was England and not Saudi Arabia after all.

But even so, It wasn't " aide and succor for our enimies", it was a statement to her audience of her political beliefs, and we have the right as americans to express our political beliefs anywhere we chose.
N'est Pas?
And you individually have the right to disagree publicly and loudly if you want.
But to what point?

Still this is a music forum, and we should gravitate towards that....
I like their music.
I also like Lefty Fizzell and The Eagles,
Frank Zappa and Frank Sinatra.
I didn't always agree with their politics, but so what.
Life goes on and so should we.
