I watched a part of an old episode of Roy Rogers the other day, and I was taken by how just decent the plot was. It hit on many of the values I grew up on and still hold true, and was I wrong? I believe not. So if something becomes popular or unpopular that does not determine the correctness.
I think Marty Stewart sums it up best when he talks about driving through rural America and how the music played today does not match what he sees through the windshield. So what the marketing media presents does not make it right, keep true to your beliefs and eventually we will reach equilibrium, it will never return to the way it was, but it will change.
Roy Rogers is corny too many, but if you listen to the message in the program, it has withstood the test of time. So will Country Music. Just my thoughts.

I like Willie's playing ,too, and all the other picking on this song is top notch. And it sounds like country to me. I never watch award shows, have never intentionally listened to Snoop Dog's music, so I'm judging this song with no pre-conceived notions, and I gotta say Snoop's singing is way better than Kristofferson's. He was melodic, in tune, and his part with Willie's harmony sounded fine to me. Is this the officially sanctioned annual "I hate the CMA" thread or did I miss that somewhere else?

Sorry, but I can't see the musical contribution of Snoop Dog's performance. I accept it as marketing. I guess the other side it is maybe best appreciated when stoned, so that leaves me out, not much of a song from any perspective other than entertainment, he was there representing being a pot head, rapper.

Not sure if Marty was commenting on a change in the value system of America, but more a reflection of the changed nature of commercial radio and its odd formatting. We have to be careful not to see a duet such as Willie and Snoop-Dogg's as an indicator of changing values as such. It has little to do with that, unless of course you are broadening the perspective to view it through an archaic social lens.

No Chris,
I believe Marty was talking about is what commercial radio is broadcasting, which is commercially driven. They are appealing to the largest market of available consumers.
I live in a state that it seems half the population is on antidepressants and the other half on medical marijuana, so you can make the call on social values. It is beyond me. :?

Cass, I grew up with the Willie you see in your link. One of his most iconic qualities back in the day was his "singing out of meter." At least it was appealing among all the musicians I knew at the time.. :\

Bad timing, an "Iconic Quality"? perhaps he's working out of an accompagnato to some.

Cass, in popular music, it's often referred to as "style." Compared to what he has become now, Willie used to have some. I'm not getting the point of what your musical education has to do with him.

I was at a concert, where in the first ten minutes, I wasn't able to find the groove, but suddenly it clicked! After that I found his playing with the meter quite extraordinary. This was on the evening of a very bad day for me, and if I had not already bought a ticket I wouldn't have gone. He made me feel better with his appearance and he helped me get over this troubled day. I will always be thankful for this!

"Bad timing, an "Iconic Quality"? "

Singing behind the beat is a classic style of most jazz singers. Willie got that directly from Frank Sinatra who also sang behind the beat.

Playing directly on the beat might be good for playing marches but it doesn't make for very interesting singing in my opinion.

Willie's singing is indeed referred to as "style" by many. Many more just refer to it as "stoned".Either way,Willie does not have much to do with anyone becoming an educated musician, except perhaps as the most visible living example of what not to smoke.
