Good guess Joachim. :P I was trying to take into account that the recording would have been 38 years old, when I guessed Connie Smith. What singer that you know sounds the same after that much time has passed? That being said, I have learned that Lloyd Green was the sole steel player listed on the album that included that song, and the steel on the recording in question doesn't sound much like him at all, therefore, it's probably not Connie either, OKAY? At this point, it seems to me we need more input from Ray before we offer any more (un)educated guesses. I know I'm done! In the meantime, Joachim and Pete, excuse me for living, and Ray, how about it??

I've got my baby

Barry and all. I found this on youtube one time and have'nt been able to find it again. I have searched every where I know how. I even emailed Connie Smith and her manager, with no reply. This is not Connie Smith. But I was sure someone would know who did the steel work. I have emailed Doug also but no reply as of yet. She sounds to me a lot like Jan Howard but I do not know. Thanks and keep looking. Ray

barry..there you go, stealing my lines again!

all i know is it's cool steel in the manner of the creators weldon, hal and john.

these guys are the ones who layed down the exciting honky tonk riffs. sure others since then have learned to do it as well or even technically better, maybe...but credit the originators.

just like emmons...many have mastered copying his style, but it's 'his' style.

The more I listen to this version the more it sounds like the Whites with Steve Wilkerson of some years ago. Regards, Jay Thompson

OK guys, mystery solved. I saw this thread the other day but didn't think too much about it. Anyway, I just listened to the mp3 that Ray sent Roy, and the singer is Bev Coldiron, and the steel player is Mike Sigler. Bev and her husband Alan, who is the staff bass player on the Wheeling Jamboree, did this project a couple years ago and it is filled with songs from this era. This is not a guess, I played drums on the session. Alan used several steelers on the album, but Mike definately played on this one.

And here's a forum thread on this recording from a couple of years ago - http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=185632

Interesting that this didn't show up in any kind of search I tried a few days ago, I was completely stumped. BTW, I love this version of the song.

Thank you jim Hartley, That is great news. Bev does a great job and it don't get any better at steel than what Mike Sigler put on this recording. can't wait for the other music. Thanks Ray

Fine job ALAN

Hey Ray,

You're quite welcome. I'm glad I had a few minutes this morning to take a listen.

Dave, I'd love to take total credit for the arrangement, but I sorta, kinda stole it from Mel Tillis' Statesiders. Back in "77, "78, Mel's band leader, Larry Lee (McFaden) opend the show many times with this song with an arrangement something like this. Anyway, glad you liked it.
