I've always played an S-12 when doing this so there's no problem with banging the guitar into the steel. I know if I played a double neck I'd have that problem as my belly would make sure of that!

I try to do a couple of finger style things on steel such as "I'll See You In My Dreams" and "Alabama Jubilee" but I always take off the fingerpicks for that style. I think I'll try both instruments at the gig tonight to see how it works. I've seen a couple of threads about playing steel without fingerpicks and this might be the key to doubling on both instruments.....JH in Va.
Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!

I play steel and tele for an artist I work for named Julia Haltigan, on two or three songs I switch back and forth, but usually just a verse chorus on the tele and take a solo on the emmons and go back to the tele. At first I found it almost impossible to do smoothly, but now I can pull it off pretty cleanly and almost always get some hands when I do it. I play with a thumbpick and play fingerpick-less on those songs I have to switch, even though I really do prefer the tone of the picks on the steel of course! I play thru a NV400 and a reissue Deluxe, can really make it sound like there's another guy in the band!

I was really impressed by Danny's ability to tear it up on steel and tele with Daryl, great picking on both instruments. His solo on the steel was killing.

I believe this was the challenge Junior Brown was facing when he came up with the guit-steel.

Terry Christopherson with Buck's band probably has the best solution. He plays a Steinberger guitar which is real compact and won't get in the way of playing his steel. He also sits pretty high up, which also helps

Yes, sitting high up does help control the guitar, as it's held by the strap instead of sitting on the lap. I raised my Pak-a-Seat to help my singing; couldn't understand why so many steelers sat so low that their knees were higher than their hips. You can't breathe enough for singing that way.
