Listening to the post of Ray's version of Sleepwalk made me think of this old post of different versions. Be sure to check out basil's take on this classic, as well the others...does any one else have a version?

Hi Mark. Haven't seen this thread in a while, sure appreciate your comments.
The guitar is an old Oahu Diana, but it's not original. My uncle gave it to me, it was my first steel, almost 40 years ago. He put a different cover plate and pickup on it, I think it had no hardware on it when he got it. The pickup is one of his own design, he was a Research and Development guy at Techtronix and big into musical electronics design on his own, he also played steel with a Hawaiian band for fun.
I wasn't using an amp. I ran the Diana into a Boss CS-3 compressor stomp-box because it adds some highs to the signal, not that the guitar needs them when playing out an amp, but when going direct everything tends to sounds kinda dead. I use the stompbox as a sortof amp-simulator and it really does it. I didn't have the compression up enough to matter. Then into a little Behringer MX 802A mixer, then into the computer soundcard. That's it.
Thanks again.

Bump for basilh's version of Sleepwalk(his 2nd version above recorded at Abbey Road)...the current post on S&J's version on youtube got me thinking about this old topic. There is also a version of mine with 2CAN...I play it much different now, & will play it different in the future after seeing Santo play it on youtube...I think that that is one of the things that I like the most about playing music...watching a song & the way you play it change over time.
[This message was edited by Terry VunCannon on 17 September 2006 at 05:43 PM.]

I prefer his brother Santo's versions.
No matter how you play this piece it sounds good. I used to play it in E major tuning on a homemade lap steel, and sometimes in standard guitar tuning on a regular solid electric with a bar: nowadays I play it in C6, but it never sounds the same twice.
Great versions Basil. Don't you mean Somnambulism ?!?

Alan, you spotted the name I used for the clip on 'YouTube' !!
I was a little concerned about copyright.
I admire Jody's loyalty to the Farina Bros, but I much prefer the playing of SANTO who after all is said and done, is the one who played the steel guitar on all of THEIR hits.
Just my opinion and take on the situation.
[This message was edited by basilh on 19 September 2006 at 12:57 AM.]

Micheal, thanks for asking about my clip of Sleepwalk... the original link doesn't work anymore because I had the file in my website's folder, and now my website is down for some restructuring. I'll email Baz about posting it, as per his kind offer to host clips.
Maybe I should just keep my big mouth shut, but regarding my clip, although I really appreciate the kind comments on it, when I listen to it it mainly makes me just think, "shoot, I can do better than this", and I plan to re-record it and do a better job of it so in a way I'm kinda reluctant to post it, but what the hey, it's only life, ha.
This version was just a "let's try it on this lapsteel and see what happens" kinda thing. I wasn't at all trying to mimic Santo's version, just doing it as I felt it at the time.
Anyway, I'll ask Baz if he'll put it up.
Yes, you gotta admit, Sleepwalk is the all-time number-one classic instrumental. It was one of the first I learned on regular guitar, I had (still have) it on a Chet Atkins album, "Teensville" and didn't even think to play it on steel til years later, ha.
It was one of my regular instrumentals on PSG, I'd quit non-pedal when I went to pedals but just lately come back to playing "non-pedal" steel too.
