Stroll down to the bottom for Jim Phelps newly submitted version. You slow-dancing fans are going to love this.

Ok, here's my version of Sleepwalk. as much in the 60's garage band style as possible.

Apologies to Johnny.

Anybody else got a version? Let's hear them all.
[This message was edited by Charlie McDonald on 26 August 2005 at 02:14 AM.]

One of my Hawaiian friends who is a pro, is awful tired of playing Sleepwalk, per requests. Maybe he got tired after a hundred times around!!

Maybe so, Bill. I've never played the song, always wanted to put together a version.
I probably should have posted it in Humor, I can't take it too seriously.

Many players will not play it because it's such a cliche, but it became a cliche because it's such a great song. I'm partial to the Strangers version. Norm played it very well and Roy Nichols did a beautiful bridge in it. I like to play it occasionally.

SleepWalk is one of my all time favorite steel guitar instrumentals. I also made a meeger attempt at playing this great song way back in 1986. I remember like it was only yesterday. At that time i had only been playing about a year. And it was one of the first instrumentals i learned, Sleepwalk and BootHeel Drag. I played this on a Sho~Bud, however i think i only used 1 pedal one time. The rest of the song is without pedals, so i feel safe to include it here. It is played in the key of C, on the C6th Tuning. So please no snickering ok? i am not a Charlie McDonald or Kay Das..but i still had fun playing this song..oh by the way..i played through an old Peavey Mixer..into an old Sony Reel To Reel...so please forgive the poor quality, and poor playing...
Download
i wanted to play this song with kinda a "Country Flavor"...it may take a few minutes to load...so grab a coffee...in the mean time....
[This message was edited by George Redmon on 10 June 2005 at 09:57 PM.]

[This message was edited by George Redmon on 10 June 2005 at 10:02 PM.]

Absolutely beautiful, guys!
This is the kind of musical conversation I like.
And it gives me a benchmark for how to get better quality mp3's... little more work to go. Thanks,
Charlie

I play Sleepwalk all the time with my 2Can duo. With Stienars help, I posted a clip of us doing it on January 13, 2005. I don't know how to post the clip, but you can go back to 1-13-05 in the No Peddlers section & hear it. It was recorded during a sound check for that nights show, so I am playing it pretty bland. We always have a ton of comments on that song...people of all ages love it!

i agree, this is absolutely fantastic that we can listen to each others styles and learn from each other!! steel guitar is so unique and so individualistic that no two players can play exactly the same, not true of its more famous cousin.

by the way, did you know that there is a "sleepwalk" website? dial www.sleep-walk.com.

much aloha,

It's no wonder that Santo and Johnny are in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. This tune is an evergreen that will live as long as there is music. Everybody's version of it sounds capivating!

As much as I love to hear it on Steel, I think my all time favorite performance is by Brian Setzer on his Gretsch. I've got two different live versions taped and one is accapella. Simply wonderful.

That being said; all of these arangements are wonderful! Great job guys.

Respectfully,

Basil...That version from Abbey Road is great. I love that 2nd part on the "Intro" lick...did you make that up or pick it up from another version?

Thanks Terry.. my memory is a little unreliable these last few years, BUT, as far as I can recall, the second run you refer to was influenced by the opening harmonic gliss that Santo played..It seemed at the time to be a logical "Answer" to the first phrase G A E B then ...A C A G played in the same timing and with the same feel.
I also quite like the last arpeggio chord Cmaj7, sort of C6 tuning with the A's raised a full step..

I was sitting here tonight messing with my lap steel, and since Johnny Farina was just here in Mexico City, I got the idea of doing a little clip of Sleepwalk myself. I always played it on guitar or pedal steel, this is the first time I've ever done it on non-pedal. Guess I do things a little backwards.

Stumbled across this old thread again and figured what the heck, I'll throw mine out here too. Found out the bridge on my lapsteel (old Oahu Diana) has some wear and goes zzzzzing on the first and 6th strings too... didn't notice that before. Oh well.

Nice one Jim..relaxed and accurate. You're obviously "At Home " with whatever tuning it is that you're using ? !!
Not frantic and dare I say it.. yes, I will, closer to the original played by Santo, than some of his pretenders..

Thanks Charlie and Basil for the kind words.

I used to whine about all the requests for Sleepwalk and Steel Guitar Rag etc. too when I was playing 5-6 nights a weeks in clubs, but enough time has gone by that I can appreciate the songs again.

I did this one just to hear what I sounded like playing it, to see if I could do it justice or not. I think it came out not too bad. I was going for a relaxed kind of feeling, close to the original but still my own. I wish I could get the tone this little lap has on my psg.

I'm going to put this clip in my demo. Think I'll do a couple more too. Image

Forgot to mention, if anyone was wondering, the lapsteel is tuned to standard C6 with E on the 1st string.
