"Steel Guitar Magic" - Magic indeed

Post by basilh »

As a preamble I must say that I RARELY listen to any steel guitar music analytically and in depth, I just look (Listen) to the overall canvas.

Well, whilst driving down the M1 coming home from a Gig, I played a CD and decided to work out the tunings the players were using - did I get some surprise!.

Would anyone like to venture what tunings are in use on this album ?

Have fun.
BTW what date was this recorded it's the Jack de Mello presents "Steel Guitar Magic"

The backup on this album is total cheese, but Barney and Billy's playing is classic and a definite must-study. Goodies for days!

Barney employs C6(13), B11, and E13 (also A6 on Maui Chimes).
Billy A6 and all the various pulls on his Fender pedal steel.

Is Barney on the left channel, and Billy on the right?

I don't think that panning arrangement was on all the tunes, sometimes it was reversed and sometimes I think the steel may have been just Billy, if every track is both of them then Barney is playing pedals as well.

Beyond the Reef, Lahina Luna, Sophisticated Hula and The Hawaiian Wedding Song all have pedal steel on both left AND Right channels.
(That's what I found initially interesting)
I must listen more closely to ALL the tracks and post what I personally think.

BTW Has anyone got more inf about the copedent Bill Hew Len used ?

I got my copy of this from Hilo Hattie’s and listened to it many, many times and even learned a couple tunes from. I was totally unaware that there was a pedal guitar on it.

Like Jeff said, the arrangements are total cheese, the stuff to give Hawaiian music a bad name. But the steel playing is excellent.

Gads! This album came out over 150 years ago as an lp. I have played that old lp so many times and have almost worn it out. Now I have it in cd format and I still enjoy "cheese". To each his own, but I happen to like it, (and I like cheese also...worked in a dairy for a summer.)

What is it about the arrangements that make it cheesy? I kind of know what you guys mean, but I kind of like it, too! Is it the "tremolo-ed" vibrophones? "Shakers"? Percussion intros? Just wondering. Going from older Iona stuff to this is definitely different, but I don't think it gives Hawaiian music a bad name. Were Billy and Barney really hard up for money that they'd participate in something cheesy? Was it the time period? Lots of questions, I know, but I'm trying to understand.

How do you count the votes for your tunings poll?

I gave a vote for the E13th, yet you still show "0"?

Just curious,

After some searching, I double clicked on the title and buttons came up. So, I voted for E 13th.

There were no buttons when I just normally read the topic as I always do.

Thanx,
Jim

Jim, I think you have to log in with your password etc. to have your vote registered in a poll. It seems to me that I can't even see the "buttons" unless I've done this.

Trying not to turn this into an IT topic, but I do not accept 'cookies' on my PC. If a website is so set up that cookies must allowed or I can't see the site properly, then I turn off that website.

I did log in properly when I tried to vote in this poll (if I were not logged in, I could not have sent a reply). After several tries, I did manage to cast a vote as I said above.

The Steel Guitar Forum is still my favorite (and only) website where I can read and discuss topics
of the steel guitar world with several thousand others who are a part of that world. Keep up the good work 'Forum'!

Thanx,

I voted for the tuning that I use most which is C6th, but I use B11th and C#m7 almost as much with a little E13th thrown in here and there.

I really enjoy the variety of tunings. And of
course some songs seem more fitted to certain
tunings.

Aloha, :)
