He's absolutely right. He has out sold most all the other ones. He's been disrespected for years. He proved them all wrong. When he was rejected by Nashville the first time there were four #1 hits on his promo tape. The exec told him he couldn't write or perform. Its all controlled. Smart man.

Toby's writing and singing are okay, I guess, but IMHO, Toby's still a little too "edgy" and outspoken for the conservative C.M.A. bunch. I kinda view him as a newer version of Travis Tritt, who didn't have a lot of luck with the C.M.A., either.

Whatever. In my mind he's still an average singer. He has had a few tunes which stood out bit I feel mostly because of the tracks behind him.

Awards are presented, not asked for, and never should be given because someone thinks THEY should have one.

Much like they disrespected the top selling, top o' the charts, top drawing road shows of Hank Jr in the 80's, they really do dis' TK. While he is not the best singer around with his machine gun/sheep bleating vibrato, he is a very good song writer and producer. He also does not walk the line.. bravo TK !

I was doing the pm drive time shift on local radio in 1992-95 when Mercury records released a well produced cd to radio of TK, Shania, & some other guy named John Brannon. It was obvious to me, the music director, within 10 seconds, that he had a hit...Shanias' tune was a catchy little ditty named "What Made You Say That", Brannons tune while I liked it, was a bit "ALT" or modern country for the time.
Shanias' tune sounded like a modern Crystal Gayle..
The TK tune was "Should Have Been A Cowboy"

I've heard a few others talk about Toby's songwriting skills, but every time I look at the credits it seams to list Scotty Emerick as songwriter.

In fact on the past five Toby Kieth albums Scotty Emerick has written 36 of the songs and has penned the past 8 Toby top ten hits("I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight", "Beer For My Horses", "I Love This Bar", "Whiskey Girl", "As Good As I Once Was","Get Drunk and Be Somebody", "A Little Too Late", "Taliban Song" and "Weed With Willie" all Scotty Emerick songs).

So what exactly is Toby writing, besides checks to Scotty Emerick?

At one point they asked him to drop Scott Emerick and let label writers write for him. He flatly refused. The guy has got guts. You are right. He's not the world's greatest singer, but neither was Ernest Tubb. Keith is a stylist, and him and Emerick can pen top ten hits on a bus. He has made ALOT of money for the labels he has worked for. When I hear a new Toby song I just smile. He's got a Toby hook, and it sells. I remember seeing him open for Ricky Van Shelton and I said to my friends to watch this guy because he was going to be big someday. He's got gravitas. People like him. He's very confident in his abilities. I listen to Red Steagall and Bobby Flores, but I like Keith also because he's not phony.
He came straight out of the Honky Tonks.

I LOVE THIS BAR,now you all will want to TALK ABOUT ME. Why do so many people dislike Toby Keith? A friend of mine was discussing with me that he thought it was wrong for Toby to sing about patriotism. Pointing out the lyrics of one of his songs,he was referring to SHOVING A BOOT UP HIS A%$. Toby didn't have any right to sing such lyrics because he wasn't ever in the service. My friend's favorite artist who recorded songs about WHEN YOU ARE CUTTING DOWN MY COUNTRY YOU ARE ON THE FIGHTING SIDE OF ME was unable to serve his country because he was in jail at the time--no disrespect as he is also one of my favorites. Why cut Toby down? He is of the new generation of the Good Old Boys. Joe

Anyone notice how the steel player is way over to the side, far from the others in the band, who are pretty much grouped together?

Could be a good thing, but it's interesting.

Hey, does that person really exist or is that his writing pseudonym. Because his songs seem to be thematic of late I assumed he wrote them all himself.

Seems like a waste of guitars doesn't it. Not necessary. Toby's is probably just a prop. The real acoustic player is standing behind him.

Have you ever heard a Toby Kieth song?

There is usually about six guitar parts going on at once. So he has to have three guys up there trying to cover all six parts.

Not that I'm a Toby Keith fan, or that he's a fellow Okie, but as long and as large as he has been in this "so-called" music business, I think I would have to agree with him.
