Here are a couple of photos I thought I'd share with everybody. The first one is Speedy West and myself when I was 13. The second is me and Gene Crownover at Cains Ballroom standing under a picture of Bob Wills when I was 12. Let the zingers begin!
Randy what a great start you got at a great age. It sure has paid off for you, and I am glad for your success.
I first heard of you from Zane Beck, who predicted you would someday be one of the great steel players. He was right, Larry Petree
Randy....in 1981 when I was interviewing/auditioning steel players for a job in Cozumel , Gene applied for it. However , he was beginning to be in poor health and I decided against it. I was a fool. Stupid too !!!!!!
Hi Randy....Where was the Cimmeron Ball Room located in Tulsa? When I was in High School in Kansas back in the early "50's", a bunch of us went to Tulsa to see the Great "Leon" and his Western Swing Band but I can't remember where it was located realitive to Cain's Ball Room.
Love the pictures of the old ZB's, Wish I still had my "69" D-10. alan

I'll bet the old ZB still sounds great, does the blue suit still fit? (couldn't resist)
I had a 12 string ZB for several years, but I really never got used to the universal tuning, and it was too hard to change the setup to experiment. So, I got rid of it and stayed with a D10.

MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro.
Alan, I never did get to go to the Cimmaron Ballroom. It burned down I believe in the early 60s. I can get info from my Mom. It was close to Cains though.
Nope, that's not Gene Pooler. Gene played a Wright Custom guitar. I really figured someone would know who that is.
The first picture with Speedy and I, notice the smoke between his ring and little finger! Back then he wouldn't play without one even if he didn't smoke it. It was for show! My how times have changed.
He was just out of the service and went to work for Stonewall Jackson. The band I was in opened for them at Cains Ballroom. After the show Saturday night Stonewall flew back to Nashville and the band picked up a club job in town for the next week. My dad would go over and pick Rick up at the hotel and drop him off at the house for the day. We'd set around and play all day then at night I'd go sit in with Rick and the band at the club. I learned a whole pile of new material that week! Rick was playing a permanent Sho-Bud then.
Wow, I've been looking for years for a photo of my old ZB and was going through some of my mothers old photos and there it was.
Looks like I was demonstrating the "CLAW" tecnique for the right hand. I guess I had been playing (or not) for about three years or so when this was taken. I bought this guitar from Larry Petree in Bakersfield around 1973.

Casey, the one on the right is a Sho Bud, I don't remember the model, I bought it from Larry Petree. He might remember the model. I know It was built in Arkansas and the first night I had it on stage, it blew up and spent the next two months at the Factory in Arkansas. The one on top of the Leslie unit is one that I built. I moved to Bakersfield about the time that Mosrite was going out of business and would go by their warehouse and buy the amplifiers and speakers for about $35 for the two, then build the cabinets and sell them for $175. I built at least four of them. I do know that one of them is still being used by a fellow in China Lake California as a lead guitar amp.
Not much to say about the ZB, it was 8 floor and had 5 knee levers of which one of the LKR levers was not hooked up so I removed it. It was Clear finish on the top and the cherry finish on the front.
I still have the 1963 SG Standard which in the picture and it is about 98% of new condition. Wish I still had the ZB. (I know your from Wichita, My wife and I are from Pratt.)
