How many here are push/pull only - no all-pulls?

How many here are push/pull only - no all-pulls?

Post by Duane Reese »

First let me say that I'm not knocking all-pulls - I've played some fantastic ones and could be happy the rest of my life with only one of several of them. I've played a dandy little pull-release too, by the way.

But how many others besides me have nothing but a push/pull(s)? Anyone care to share their thoughts and feelings about getting by with nothing but the old Emmons guitar or Promat? Are you happy where you are at with this? (I am, but we ain't talkin' about me  )

Update: since starting this thread, I have aquired an all-pull in addition to the old '77 Emmons, so I can no longer say that I'm "all" push/pull.

Now if you'll excuse me, while I go hide somewhere...

I have always loved to play the GFI Economy 'Pull Release' steels, I also like to play the Marlen Pull Release guitars. There is just something about the feel of those guitars that I like. I too have had many good 'all pull' guitars, but they seem to lack that special feel on the pedals. Who knows, I may be nuts, but at this point, who cares, right?

Duane,

I have two push/pulls. A 1974 rosewood mica, and a 1971 mahogany mica fatback, split-tail.
I've had the '71 for years, but just recently purchased the '74. I've tried a lot of the all-pulls, but keep going back to the Emmons original....I like the tone. They're a bit different, but all "Emmons" and all GOOD! :)

35 years: ONLY Emmons push-pulls, never owned or played anything else. Of course I have tried many other steel guitars, bought and sold a lot, but my personal PSG has always been p/p Emmons. One I played for 25 years.

Well, o'course I've had a few mainstay guitars too that were all-pulls (heck - one time all I had was a D-10 Domland Stereo cable job) but as much as I liked the all-pulls, none seemed to be able to satisfy my cravings for the tone I'd get from a push/pull. I got spoiled on it!

After having a near-fatal bout with G.A.S., I realized that the happiest steel player doesn't own every guitar they've ever heard of - they just have one thing, the one they like the best and that's all they have, and they're happy. I knew that for me, it was the push/pull.

I now have one pedal steel and one only... And here it is:
Image

Don't know if anybody recognizes it, but it's #2292 D - used to be owned by Corky Owens, so I'm told. It's gone through a little bit of transformation though. I 'chromed up' the top, dude...
Image

I don't know how many have this Emmons logo - it's got a chrome backing. Is this common?

Anyhow, this guitar was basically everything I wanted in a push/pull as well. I know there are things these guitars can't do, or can't do as well as an all-pull, but it does everything I want, that's for sure. It even tunes up better than most all-pulls I've had (when you've got all the springs it needs, it's easy). I don't anticipate trouble.

Oh hey Ernie - I was thinking: those pull-releases do have a nice pedal feel actually. There is some slack that feels similar to a push/pull, but different - the notable quality though is the ease of motion. It's probably so nice because there is so much less stuff being moved around, mechanism-wise.

Thanks again to Larry Behm by the way - that lever wing you sent me is this one's RKR now!

Beautiful classic guitar! It doesn't get much better than that.

I know what you mean about the push pull tone. I have discovered however that not all push pulls are created equal. Some have a very thin tone, others have a fatter tone. If the sound is there, it can be heard naturally in the guitar... without an amp.

I've owned a few old Emmons guitars, including a black D-10 that was my main guitar for 25 years. This is my current baby. Mid-70s S-10 with incredible tone.

I have 3 P/P's. The 2 black ones are '66 bolt-ons and the rosewood is a '71 fatback.

Now I also have a Emmons Legrande III and a Sho-Bud Pro-1 (all pulls). But I must say, I prefer my P/P's over anything else out there. Nick

Man, you got to love 'em! It can be said about the Emmons guitar: it's a fully professional instrument, it's tonal performance is nothing short of legendary, and it's an operational workhorse.

Bobbe Seymour is right when he talks of the fine quality and massive potential of the configuration.

If there is anyone who has ever been push/pull-only at one time in the past, we'd also like to hear from you. Tell us about your experience...

I have an Emmons P/P single 12. It tunes easily and stays in tune. It's not heavy. It's a georgeous instrument. Better tone than any other brands I've heard. Everything I want in a steel guitar. She's a keeper that's for sure.

Tried a few all pull guitars but always go back to my old push pull. This time I think I'll stay there.

Its push pull for me. Although I stillm own several models of Sho-Bud, for me, even after playing different brands of all pulls, I prefer the pp's. Mine are a 68 black mica and 78 rosewood mica.

I have had a number of all pull guitars but finally settled on two Emmons Originals. One black, one satin rosewood, both rebuilt by Bryan Adams and loaded up. I have the same backing plate on the logo of the black one, Bobbe has them. To me nothing has quite the feel or sound, but I do think that a guy needs to be pretty well set on the pedal set-up, they are a pain to take apart.
Regards to all,
Byron

I'd love to see that thing, Mickey! I sent you an e-mail...

I just got the word back from Rebecca Lashley and it turns out that my p/p was born on May 5, 1977. Shoot - if only I'd gotten a hold of Emmons a month ago instead of now - I missed it's 30th birthday! :!: :x :D

Well, there's worse waiting lists.

Man, that thing blows me away; I'm glad you chimed on, Damir. So how did they do it? I wonder if they had to get the patents from Emmons or if they expired, or what... If you've got time, tell us how and in what respects that measures up to an Emmons... Thanks!

I am also a Push Pull only player. I used to have a Sho~Bud Super~Pro, but I traded it in on a 1983 Emmons D10 Push Pull in 2003. It has 8 pedals and 9 knee levers. I play this guitar every weekend, wherever my gigs are.
