Steel Players Respect

I feel the Steel players in the South have more respect for Steel Players that are trying to learn the Steel Guitar than the one's in the North and this is from a Yankee.They are happy to help you out and can not do enought for you to help you to learn.I'm thinking obout hanging it up and forget about playing Steel Guitar.I would rather do that than get insulted.

Sam, if you are being left with those kind of feelings I would think that you are associating with the wrong people. They are the ones with a problem and not you. Find you some real friends. They are out there. Any one who thinks they are better than you need only look around a short distance to find someone who can blow their doors off unless the folks you are referring to are a select few with names like Buddy, Tommy, Paul, Randy or John and I know those guys are not that type.

Sam, I to think your hangin with the wrong crowd. I've been steelin about 6 months and found nothing but help from everyone. There is always going to ego's to deal with, but nothing like the six string world I came from. I suggest you go to some steel shows and introduce your self and ask questions. Don't go to clubs and expect anything. I know when i'm playing in that atmosphere I'm hyped up as I'm sure most musians are.One more thing, I love the steel and always have. Most of what I know (which isn't much) I've Learned on my own, and I'm already laying down tracks on my recording's. So hang in there and keep trying, your plan will come together.

You are not looking in the right direction. Many great steel players are available and will help you find a teacher or even teach you themselves, just look around. We are fortunate here in Texas with the psg players willing to help, very fortunate.
Don't get discouraged. You want to do this and no one but you is going to get it done. Hang in there and if you need more encouragement I have a football coach living close by and I'll have him call you.Boy he'll pump you up.

Hi Sam, I don't know what your problem is with northern players, but I will try to help you as much as I can with my limited knowledge. Remember Sam, anyone can only show you, and it's up to YOU to learn it. We can't learn it for you. YOU have to work at it.
My guitar teacher once said to me,45 years ago, that I taught myself guitar. What he meant was, that I worked on it at home and came in and asked him the questions.

This forum will make you think that all steelers are super nice people, and almost all of them are. I have met a very few steelers over the years that had an attitude, but for every one like that there are many, many who are glad to help and share their knowledge. I imagine the ones you're talking about are no more than one or two individuals. You don't need them.

Sam - This would be a good time to invest in some steel courses via the forum, steel guitar webs, individual instructors i.e. Jeff Newmans courses. They are about the same price as a steel lesson, and you don't have to listen to some self servign twit talk down to you. Just a thought.

Sam, I am embarassed by this post...and I hope that wasn't your intention.
The people responding to this are under the totally false impression that the steel players in the Northeast
are somehow disrepectful and are not helpful to beginners and you know nothing could be further from the truth.
Myself, Manny, Roger, Harry, Lenny, Kerry, Elaine, Ron and everyone else I can think of have spent hundreds of hours over the last dozen years teaching beginners, inviting them into our homes, sharing tab, holding jam sessions and inviting them to sit in with us.
If you have personal differences with one person, please deal with it privately, but do not give the impression that the entire local steel population is not helpful....that simply is not true.

Sam, you're not a new comer to this forum and that's a pretty broad paint brush you're using. Got a problem with a couple of players it's my opinion that should be taken up with them, but to blast the entire section is, in my opinion, not in your best interest. For what's it's worth and my opinion, and I realize you didn't ask for it, but if there's a fire go to the fire to put it out is the way I believe I would handle it. I know several players in the northern section of the country that would give you the shirt off their back if they were of the opinion you needed it. My .02c worth.

Sam,
As you probably know the PSG is one of the most difficult instruments to learn to play. It takes a huge amount of dedication and persistence to learn to play this beautiful instrument but you get out of it what you put into it. I have several instructional DVDs -- Jeff Newman, John Hughey, and Joe Wright. These are all good, and there are others that are just as good but even with these DVDs it became apparent that I needed some one-on-one instruction so I finally found someone to give me a few lessons. My instructor gave me some practice exercises, and told me to practice a minimum of two hours every day. I have practiced two hours some days but most days I have probably only practiced about an hour and a half. In the approximate two months that I have been taking lessons I can tell that I have improved but I have a long way to go! Anyway, learning to play the PSG is something that I have always wanted to do, and I know that I can do it. YOU CAN TOO!!! Just don't give up, and don't pay any attention to those that try to discourage you. When you get an opportunity to jam or play a gig take it, and just do your best. If they don't already know your skill level let them know. That way you should avoid any potential embarrassment. But whatever you do -- don't give up!!!

Fred Shannon is right on. Obviously Sam you have a beef with someone in particular(and this isnt the first time...I remember your involvement in a bad forum sale, you were the seller). During that little episode you said you would work it out directly with the person involved...I would suggest you do the same in this instance and not make vague generalizations, or passive aggresive posts like this one hoping whomever offended you will read this.

Sam,I started out in NY,I learned from Bob Brocious,Bill Keith,and Chris Middaugh.I then moved to Texas and learned from Jimmy Day,Josh Dubin,Lucky Oceans,Herb Steiner and other greats,I have no idea what you mean?

Over the years I've had some "not so pleasant" experiences with a couple of steel players, but what part of the country they were from had nothing to do with it, they were just Jerks to begin with!

The majority of the folks I've met here on the Forum are just "Folks", willing to help anyone any way they can.

I'm from the North and as a steel player in the North I find myself somewhat of a minority. That being said I would help any steel player along If I were asked. Trouble is with so few up here nobody ever asks.
I can't imagine not helping someone along with any instrument as getting headed in the right direction is key. Thats straight from a Northerner

Tony I'm not putting you and some of the guys down. That is not what I meant. I can not say what I want to say on the Forum.I do know we have a couple of Members that do not like me and I was called a Ass a Dictater and also was told by one person that they would not pay $5.00 to hear me play and would rather have a Pro play.I was also told that I went to our meeting at have a fight and that I would be the looser.Anna and I put a lot into getting our Steel Guitar Assoc. going and we hate to see it go down the tube.I'm Sorry and I'm very hurt over all that is going on. Anna and I did this for all Steel players no matter what their playing level is and now we are getting left out.There are a lot of members that know there is a Click and this is going to ruin the Assoc.

Tony I did not mean it in the way you are thinking.I was called a Dictater by one and told I went to the meeting for a fight and that I would lose. I was also told by one that this person would not pay $5.00 to hear me play.Anna and I worked hard to form this Assoc. and we do not need to be thrown down. I founded it as you told them and some of them have no respect for me. I put a lot of my time and money into it and this is what i get for it.

I did however meet one who wasnt so nice but maybe because I was his replacement in a band that lets just say he didnt quit. Steel players or mechanics, people are people
