What is 'Hawaiian Calls' Radio ?

Post by basilh »

This is NOT intended as a 'Witch Hunt' and in no way is a reflection on b0b, or indeed aimed at him, nor indeed Scotty. The ORIGINATOR is to whom I direct the criticism.

Whilst I can understand why b0b had to reprint the inscription 'As Is', I fail to understand just why this error at the 'Steel Guitar Hall of Fame' has gone unnoticed for so long, AND, presumably it's actually on the plaque as well as just the description of it !!
The plaque reads
<B>BARNEY ALVIN KALANIKAU ISAACS, JR.

THIS HAWAIIAN WAS THE ISLAND'S PREMIER PLAYER DURING 6 DECADES PERFORMING REGULARLY AT ALL THE ISLAND'S MAJOR HOTELS. HE TOURED THE MAINLAND, CANADA AND JAPAN. AND WAS THE FEATURED INSTRUMENTALIST ON HUNDREDS OF RECORD SIDES AND NUMEROUS ALBUMS AND FOR 25 YEARS, HE WAS THE STEEL GUITARIST OF THE “HAWAIIAN CALLS” RADIO

BORN: JULY 18, 1926 HONOLULU, HAWAII
DIED: FEBRUARY 12, 1996
INDUCTED: 1999</B>

I really think Barney Isaacs Jr. deserves the same kind of diligence and accuracy in his epilogue, that he so well displayed in his playing.

I'll "second" the motion. Gads, "HAWAII CALLS" is an institution...a great program which popularized Hawaiian music and the steel guitar throughout the free world for over 40 years. Someone should make a new plaque and get this glaring error corrected.

Ditto:

Hawaii Calls, The Arthur Godfrey Hawaii Show and Jody Carver inspired me to take up Steel Guitar way back then, when I was about 13-14 years old!!

Thank you.

Rgds,

Ron

I owe so much to Barney, Billy and Jules, and in fact all of the 'Hawaii Calls Radio Show" era that I'd be prepared to sponsor the replacement myself. FWIW

So it's missing the word 'show' at the end?

Hawaii calls, not Hawaiian calls is the point Baz is making. The show was called Hawaii calls radio.

Can the plaque be modified, like taking the a & n off? Seems like the easiest remedy, if it can be done.

I'd hate to see people confuse it with Zimbabwe Calls or mistake Barney Issacs for Barney Fife. Heck, I'd hate for Basil Henriques to be confused with Basil Fawlty...... Image

He's not tall enough to be confused with Basil Fawlty Image Image

John Cleese is reputed to be 6'4-3/4" [1.95m]
Whilst I'm only just 6'0" .. I have had people tell me that no-one is exactly 6 foot tall, so I'll modify it to 5'11-3/4"..

There's NOTHING Faulty about this Basil though, sometimes things have been working just a little bit too well !!
But I still think the the plaque and all it's references SHOULD be modified, and I'll stand by my offer.<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by basilh on 09 July 2006 at 02:44 PM.]</p></FONT>

At the moment, it seems that the Hawaiian contingent in the SGHOF are just there as a 'Token' gesture..

I'm certain that if a similar mistake had been made with a non Hawaiian stylists plaque and bio, it would have been corrected immediately.
IMHO

I didn't have the pleasure of getting to know Barney. I didn't get back into steel guitar until 1999, but wish I had met him. From what I know about him, he deserves all the good things said about him and was an Hawaiian treasure.
Yes Derrick , you need more guitars!!
Let's see.....I'm going to clean out my closet again soon.....

If ANY of the Country Players had an error like "for instance :- Grand old OPARY, what would happen ?

I still think that the Hawaiians in the SGHOF are "Token Gestures"

BTW There has been no one taking me up on my offer !!

I commend you for your offer Baz. Hope something gets done to correct the glaring error.

As for Barney, he was a gem in every way. His big passion in life insofar as food was concerned, (besides Chinese), was the sausage. One year I decided he deserved a real treat. I took over two long rolls of Ukrainian Kubasa made locally near Edmonton in the small town of Mundare. This unique sausage is not available in Hawai'i. The delighted look upon his face when he took that first bite was priceless! Barney has always been my all-time favorite steel player in Hawaii. Mary and I felt so fortunate to be included amongst his many friends. Image

Posting your offer on this forum probably will not reach the people who actually are involved in the creation and/or modification of those plaques, Basil. I'd suggest you contact DeWitt Scott directly, but wait until after the International Steel Guitar Convention as he'll be pretty busy until then.

Brad, I sent Scotty an E-Mail with a link to the topic, and he said
<SMALL>I can't get the http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum2/HTML/009450.html to come up can you let me know what you are referring to.</SMALL>
So I did.

Must have HTML disabled in his E-Mail Programme !<font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by basilh on 26 August 2006 at 03:26 PM.]</p></FONT>

Halfway there,

I see that on the SGHOF site, Hawaiian has been corrected to Hawaii, now just the addition of the word show after Radio and all will be "hunky-dory"

I have since been informed that a new plaque would cost $1,200.
I still would sponsor it..
