Small speaker

Post by Howard Tate »

Recently someone said his lap sounded better through a smaller speaker. I was disappointed in the sound of my new 8 string lap from Bobbe Seymours, through my N112 and my FSk. After reading that I tried it through an old Peavey Back Stage 30, and it sounds pretty good. I didn't think much of the little amp til now, and don't know how it would be at a higher volume.

Hi,
I play through an ampeg jet, and it is wonderful. I find that using a 12" or smaller helps punch the sound and man does this thing scream. I like the ampegs better than the fenders but that's a personal taste thing. They seem to have a deeper, tone to them, more blue-like. Yes, I use my amp reverb, it makes the guitar more alive.
thanks,
SKip

I have had both the FSK and NV112 and liked both. They were just too much amp for my studio.

At home my steels go through an A/B switch, Digitech RP50,RV-3, Mobile Pre-USB and into the computer and out through 2 Studiophile DX4 (4") speakers. The sound is great. I also run a second line to a 1948 Fender Deluxe. I hardly ever turn on the amp because the sound is fine through the computer. This gives me the option to play along with a CD or BIAB and record when I FINALLY get it right. If you play out The NV112 would probably do fine.

Play around with different configurations until you find the sound you want. That is half the fun...

I'm very impressed with the sound of my little Roland Micro Cube, and it even runs on batteries.

when I run my lap thru my 10" Jensen in my 1958 Gibson amp I feel the need for my delay unit. the dry sound from the smaller amp needs expansion, so Idial in some nice reverb and a touch of delay.
then Im ok.

I recently bought a Roland Micro Cube and am amazed as so are some of my friends at the sound that comes out of it.

It has only a 5" speaker, with effects, Reverb, Delay, tremolo, etc., runs on batteries or power supply included. It weighs only 7 lbs.

I gaurantee you won't believe it until you try one.

My first experience with one was at Dayton City Folk Festival and I tried Rick Aiello's. Then I heard him and Bobby Ingano playing through one. I was inmpressed and had to have one.

There's an interesting phenomenon here. Don Barnhardt and myself were both posting replies at the same time (note that the computer just dated them a few seconds apart.) For some reason both replies got posted twice.

I had a message "pool overflow" and probably Don had the same. I guess with the message not going through we must have clicked on the mouse again.....
[This message was edited by Alan F. Brookes on 28 July 2006 at 08:15 AM.]

My 40's Gibson BR-1 is my favorite for lap steel. But I would never take it out of the house. The few calls I've had lately have not needed an amp. They all want to use Amp Farm or some other modeler. It's their money, and the sounds have been pretty good.

How's this for small (thats a 2 3/4" x 3/4" Dunlop bar next to it) ...

Image

It's my third favorite amp ... my top two have 10" field coil speakers ...

This tube Magnasync Moviola (an amplifier for old movie editing machines) died a few months ago ... but was repaired by my buddie (a certified Fender amp repairman) ...

And whatever he did sure boosted this little rascal's performance ...

I liked it alot before it "petered-out" ... but now ... phewww

Another buddie ... Sage Harmos ... turned me on to this little jewel a few years back ... and boy, he'd be proud of the sound now !!!!

I just realized that the Micro- Cubes may be more amp that we need. :-) Ha!

That's a neat looking little amp. How much smaller do they get??

I wonder why this is:

Jerry Byrd used 80 watts and two 12's. His sound was better than OK, by me. Image

Clean ... ol' buddy ...

For many, many years ... JB played thru a Volu-Tone ... low watt amp ... with a small field coil speaker (8" or 10" ... ??? ... probably a Rola.)

Many consider the combo of his Ricky Bakelites with ... said amp ... his best sound ever (me included).

It's hard to predict which amp will work well. My BF Deluxe Reverb with the original oxford speaker sounded so fine with my Gibson EH-185. Now, with a Weber ceramic in there, every other guitar sounds better while the laps have lost a little. That same Gibson into a Magnatone M10A (called a "suitcase", if you ever see one, you know why, 1x12, maybe 20 watts) is just the best. My favorite at the moment.
[This message was edited by Michael Devito on 02 August 2006 at 10:51 AM.]
