Strobo Flip Tuner Hiss
I've had my Peterson Strobo Flip tuner for several months now and I can't seem to fix the problem of the super high frequency hiss that it puts into my signal if I try to keep it in line during performance. At high sound levels, it is too much to stand. I've tried running it on its adapter and also just on batteries, but the same resulting high hiss. I would love to be able to leave this in line for quick tuning (ha ha, as if there was quick tuning!) but that messes with my tone. Any thoughts on how this could be fixed?

Drew-I bought a Jerry-Rig at the Texas Show this year to overcome the Strob-0-flip tuner problem. I now run the tuner on batteries, and only when I need to tune, do I turn the tuner on. It saves on batteries too. The Jerry Rig is the only solution I could find to resolve the hiss(440 cycle) problem.

I added the feature of a dedicated "tuner out" on the new Black Box and the Revelation preamp to avoid this. Tuners are great things, but with all the digital stuff going on inside them, I prefer to keep them completely out of the direct signal path. If you properly split and then buffer the signal to the tuner, you can keep your audio path unpolluted. The Jerry Rig is a great way to deal with this problem too.

I have a weird situation with my VS-II as well. When first turned on it is always completely silent, but if I leave it on it will start making a sort of sweeping hiss sound a bit like the backgound noise some phase shift pedals make. If I tap the side of the unit with the tips of my fingers it will go silent again, but only for awhile. At first I thought it was only happening when using the A/C adapter but it does it with batteries too. I've heard of other VS-II users experiencing the same thing. I've not found it to be a problem since I don't normally leave the tuner on for any length of time, and it continues to operate accurately even when the noise is present. It does seem like an odd thing though...especially the part about the noise stopping when the unit is tapped.

NOise TUNER
Noise Tuner,
Bud Vanderburg was here for our Sat. Jam. He kept his Flip in line all the time active and no noise, check with him and ask why it is silent.

Stu, is your VS-II still on warranty? I haven't contacted Peterson about mine but the warranty is long gone. When you spoke to them did it sound as though this is a problem they are well aware of?
I'd be interested to hear how you make out with yours and what the turnaround time is. I don't gig over the summer months so if it wasn't going to cost me much I might send them mine later on. For me it's just a minor irritant but it would be nice to have it cleared up.

Bill,They said that it would be fixed under warranty,Mine probably has run out by now.I think they said about a one week turnaround. They didn't say that it was a common problem....I didn't want to mention that,I was trying to Be nice.

I Might Mention.....
When my Strob-O-Flip is attached to the power converter, and is hooked up in line between my guitar and amp, it makes a loud 440 cycle hum. I don't use the converter at all. When the flip is used on batteries, it's silent nthrough the amp. When I turn it off while operating it on batteries, it creates a slight distortion through the amp while the steel is played. The Jerry-Rig solved my problems. Brad Sarno can explain these issues better than I.

Does this mean that the Strob-O-Flip doesn't have true bypass either? I know the VS-IIs don't. Peterson makes great tuners but they're pricey as tuners go, and for the money I think true bypass should be a standard feature. There have been more than enough reincarnations of the original to have addressed this by now. ..noise problems too for that matter. When I turn it off while operating it on batteries, it creates a slight distortion through the amp while the steel is played.

My problem is either with batteries,or the AC adapter,It spits out white noise.I like the tuner a lot so I hope that they will fix it.I don't need to buy another unit to make it work right.

I run my Stroboflip's input into the 2nd output of my volume pedal. That way, the tuner does not affect my sound at all. I briefly tried it in-line, and it was awful.
Of course, this is no good to those using two of the pedal's outputs, or if you just have one output on your pedal.

Stu, sorry it took me so long to respond to this. I've been busy.
The StroboStomp does have those tunings...but I wouldn't really recommend them. I program my own. Would be glad to give you the numbers that I use if you were interested. Thanks for the compliment on the Devin Belle stuff. She's a great singer.

Peterson fixed my hiss problem in my VS-II no charge and returned to me in a week..great service. They said it was a bad I.C.Travis it would be cool if you can send me your numbers on the "StroboStomp"I'll probably get one soon.I had Devin sing on a demo a couple of weeks ago,she was done in about 15 minutes...just wonderful,I've known her since she was 15,I used to call her "Little Faith" because she could sing all of the Faith Hill songs as good as the record at age 15.She'll do just fine in Nashville,Regards Stu

Hey Stu. They will be the same numbers for the VS-II and the StroboStomp. I've still got my VS-II, and I used it for several years. I've got all the pedal pull notes in there too. You'll have to give me a couple days to get you the numbers. I've gotta go get my gear of the truck early next week. Send me an email to remind me.

tuner
I sent my new Strobe Flip tuner for a modification, so it wouldn't distort while playing with it turned off. I also got the new larger leg mounting bracket.
If anyone is interested in buying it, it is for sale. I need 200.00 with shipping included. Larry
