Where to purchase new Non-pedal steel?
I have a question for the Non-pedal players. Here goes, if you were looking to purchase a new non-pedal steel what would you buy?
I know there are new builders, are they good?
GOD bless!

I believe this is the "Golden Age" of lap steel guitars,- there are more dedicated and skilled luthiers making high-quality instruments than there's (probably) ever been before.
Among my own favorites are Lap King, Asher, GeorgeBoards, and before I pack it up and leave I have to have a Lapdancer.
These are just the instruments I have personal experience with, the list will grow much longer as other members contribute....

NEW Steels:
Best value I've seen lately:
Randy Cordle's Bluestem Steels
http://www.bluestemstrings.com/page4.html
Top shelf:
George Piburn's Georgeboard Steels
http://www.georgeboards.com
On the top shelf I would find it quite challenging to choose between George's 'Boards and Herb's Steelmasters.

My new Remington will be arriving within the next couple of weeks. After doing alot of shopping and experimenting, it looked to me like Mr. Remington gave the most bang for the buck on S8 instruments. His instruments are lavishly praised by everybody who owns one. I've never heard a bad word about them. And I've seen them quickly snapped up when sold on the Forum. I can't wait to get mine.
Having said that, I would advise you to take a long time considering what is importatn to you in a guitar. Many people prefer metal bodied guitars like Sierra or (the other name escapes me). I think frypan style guitars are also metal by whomever they are made. Chandler makes 6 and 8 string lapsteels that are really great for rock and even heavy metal style playing. I think it's Aerosmith's guitarist who uses one. The Forum has a list of sites to explore. So does Brad's Page of Steel. Happy hunting.

I see that everyone is listing hight-end models. Try the Indy Rail from www.industrialguitars.com. I got mine for around $400 with a humbucker/coil tap and it's beautiful, sounds great and is probably the most reliable piece of equipment I own.

How much do you want to spend ? For $90 you can get a brand new Artisan from Musicians Friend. Not bad for the money, and the latest ones have better tuners and legs. I just wish they would have designed them for 8 strings.
But change the nut.
I have a couple of these bolted together, in C6 and E7, which I keep in the trunk of my car in case I need one at short notice. I wouldn't leave a valuable instrument in the *trunk. (*That's "boot" for you Brits and Aussies out there....)
Anyone who asks this question is not going to be ready to put down half his retirement stash on a Quad Stringmaster....
...that is a beautiful Remington Steelmaster, though.

Washington luthier Bob Littleton makes a very nice non pedal steel in both lap and console models, under the name West Coast Steel Guitar.. Bob and his wife Bonnie will have a booth at the TSGA Jamboree. Come see their work.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the info, and I am checking these all out. Just like pedal steels I am certain there are several great sounding ones.
What I look for is primarily the sounds, ease of playing and to somewhat an extent the price. Some of these seem to me to be over priced. I say that since they are priced as much as some pedal steels. Some are priced well over $2000, and to me that seems alittle costly. I guess if they were made out of gold probably not. Your thoughts on the pricing of these non-pedal steels?

I happened on to a website that has a Fender Deluxe Lap Steel Guitar new, lists for 642.80 but sells on their site for 449.00 shipping free with over 199.00 purchase.
Does anybody on here play one of these or know know about these newer Fenders?
THe scale is 22.5" model # FS52 Lap Steel
I also knowticed that they have the classic book Winnie Winston and Bill Keith book titled Pedal Steel Book for 21.95.
If anyone doesn't have that it's well worth the price and pictures and tuning charts in it.
Thanks and God Bless!
