Gene Jones' sound file. A treasure revisited.

Post by Denny Turner »

I was just searching for info / opinions about the Artisan Steels, ....and ran across Gene Jones' SGF posting and sound file (28 October 2005 02:43 PM) of him playing his 'Kailua-Kona Stroll' on an Artisan; ( Soundfile-only here ). YIKES Image ! Don't know how I missed that when I previously read that discussion (I musta been off in Tele-tubbies' la-la land)!

What a great example AND LESSON in playing non-pedal / Hawaiian Steel and 6th tuning, at it's best. Just the right balance of complexity and technique to learn allot from without seeming to be too much to achieve. IMHO: Were Gene (or a collaboration) to write Tablature to accompany that sound file, especially with standard technique symbols, and chords and tonal voicings noted above or below the tab "staff" at pointed tone centers and movements; ....I can't think of a better example-lesson to be had!

------------

THANKS A MIL for that sound file, Gene. I would have emailed you but I can't find an email portal on the SGF nor your website (and very cool website it is!).

If you might, please email me privately. I would like to inquire about your website mention of your awaiting AFS orders in 1956. I went through that program in 1968 and would dearly love to hear some stories, experiences and info about AFS and beyond during earlier periods; 1956 being AFS's first year at Wolters.

Aloha,
DT~

I remember that tune from the original post., I wish there was tab for it. Gene sounds great on it.

Gene's tuning is interesting. The B6 he is using is the A6 that country guys and Hawaiian guys used, only up a whole step to B6? I think Jeff Au Hoy uses A6 on a 7 string steel. I taped his song and I'm working on it, sounds perfect to me. Of course, I could be wrong about the tuning?

Denny, thank you for the kind words. It's especially meaningful coming from someone who actually lives in "paradise"! Image

Andy, I don't do tab but I'll bet you don't need it anyway.

Jesse the tuning you show is what I have, and it's recorded without a volume pedal. The strings that came on the guitar worked OK for the B6 tuning, but would probably need some substitutions on some of the other tunings.

Thanks for the confirmation Gene. I'm gonna stretch you arrangment out and make it twice as long as the original version. I think it sounds great for possible cruise ship work. Thanks...

What Jesse said. Gene, you really captured that lazing-back-on-the-beach-with-a-maitai-while-watching-a-pretty-gal-in-a-grass-skirt feel.
