Lloyd Green on Lawrence Welk

I had the great opportunity to meet Mr. Lloyd Green in February when he was honored at the Country Music Hall of Fame. One of the highlights of that presentation was the viewing of Lloyd's appearance with Charley Pride on the Lawrence Welk show playing two numbers, "Lovesick Blues" and "Just Between You and Me."

Three things from these performances stood out:

1) How genuine and exceptional Charley Pride truly is. Charley had Lloyd sit right up front and center stage next to him and, on top of that, gave a VERY nice introduction for Lloyd and made it clear that this was a Charley Pride and Lloyd Green performance. Unbelievable professionalism!

2) How great Charley's vocals are on this song. When I saw this performance, I was floored and my wife and I both felt that this particular version of "Lovesick Blues" was the best by ANYONE.

3) Of course, Lloyd's exceptional playing. I mean....unbelievable.

I mention all this because I have been hoping for months to be able to see these performances again.....and just last night I saw someone posted them on YouTube. I thought all of you would love to see this as well! Enjoy!

How in the world did Pride ever end up on Welk and in this format of just him and Green?!? How cool is that. The Welk musicians adding to the back up are doing a good job. The bass player might need to overdub just a few notes there, but the drummer did fine and Buddy Merrill on the L5 Gibson playing rhythm and Neil Lavang I believe playing some tic-tac-y low end Tele made things sound good. Good to see this. I had no idea that Pride was on there. I am appreciating Charlie Pride more these days after not having heard him for so many years. Green was a big part of his sound and it is nice to see that Pride appreciated him so much.

IMHO, Charlie was one of the hottest country singers in the mid-to-late '60s. His honest warmth of personality, and smooth voice made him a good choice, and he was a rather novel act in those turbulent times. The record companies were looking for ways to expand the appeal of country music, and also lose some of it's former "hillbilly" image.

Lloyd's presence was probably due to Charlie (or his producers) wanting to maintain his signature (recording) style, and Lloyd was the only really essential element in Charlie's music.

It certainly was refreshing to see the way it used to be.

I'm going to assume that this was Lloyd's old lightning-bolt fingertip guitar. Would I be correct in this observation?

Hey Joe,
What a treasure of time's past. May I share a memory of Charlie? Charlie appeared at the Heart of Illinois Fair--I cannot remember the year,I think it was in the late 60's. As he walked out on to the stage,things got a bit quiet.

Charlie looked out over the crowd and said these words that I will never forget.
Charlie said " folks,I would like to entertain you,if you will let me".
He got a standing ovation that went on for
some time. To my sorrow now,I can not remember if Lloyd was with him that night.

That clip with Charlie Pride & Lloyd Green on U tube has got to be one of the best ive seen yet. Charlie never sounded Better & Lloyd Was unbelievable with the stuff he was playing.I love loyds playing.

This is really the essence of country music here. You can see how great Charlie Pride is. He is just singing his heart out in a very genuine manner. The music is inside him and has to come out. He is also a class act entertainer. Well dressed and mannered. Then you have the perfect match on steel guitar next to him. Another class act. Well dressed and mannered, Lloyd again playing his heart out as Charlie is singing Lloyd is answering him on steel guitar singing with him. This is country music at its best in its genuine form. Not twisted or manipulated into rock. A great historic piece. Thank God for these two. I will be playing Saturday night wearing one of my Manuel rhinestone jackets. I will be thinking of these two as I am playing. Yes, I agree with all you Charlie Pride & Lloyd Green fans; really glad you posted this show from the u-tube. Some of my best albums are of Charlie with Mr. Green, backing him up. Would sit for hours to hear thes fine musicians do their material.. Love them both.. Thanks for sharing this with all the Forum Members..Bernie

Lots of bar slants!

Lloyd is well known for his slants, but I watched the St. Louis video twice and only saw maybe one. It looked like he raised his 1st string F# to G with a lever, then slanted to bring it up to a G#. A few other times I didn't see a slant, but heard what sounded like pulling a string behind the bar.

Is everyone else seeing "Lots of bar slants!" ?
