Anything new at the St Louis show.......

Post by Bill Hatcher »

sonic wise or guitar wise.

I listened to some of the Fri and Sat broadcast and did not hear anything that was really new sounding. Was there any playing going on in one of the smaller areas that was more modern and adventurous.

How about any new instruments or features or gadgets.
[This message was edited by Bill Hatcher on 04 September 2006 at 08:58 PM.]

Terry Bethel did an adventurous arrangement of Over the Rainbow, with some Lenny Breau alternating harmonics/non-harmonics I'd never heard on steel before. I don't know how "new" his stuff is, because I had only heard OF Terry, not actually heard him... but it's not the usual.

Star Guitars had the most beautiful inlay work I've ever seen on a steel. I was unable to play one or hear what they sound like, but they sure looked pretty.

This was our first ISGC, so really did not know what to expect. So here is our input on what we REALLY liked:

Jazz Cafe' --- man, what great Jazz tunes! Great lead guitar - fantastic, fat, Bass, too. Problem is not enough chairs - get there early next year! Also not on Steel Radio. Too bad.

Peavy Room. Listened to three PSG and one Lap steel on the same stage! WOW. Lap steel player gave everyone a lesson on forward/reverse slants.

We liked the playing outside of the main hall -- more layed back, informal, upclose, etc.

Just my take.

Ya had to be there.

Don - I swear there was some Jazz Room stuff on Steelradio - I listened for hours and seem to recall them switching over there a few times.

The jazz set was great. We need more of that.

What was the name of the fella who put together the jazz set? Is he on the Forum (what's his email?)?

That's Jim Stahlhut. He always does a first class job putting things together. He's a fine guitarist.

YES
They had new lights on a frame over the stage that seemed to bother some of the band members. It had a TV camera pointed down over the steel player so you could see what he or she was doing. They had large TV screens on each side of the stage, and they could move the camera to any steel player that was out front.
They move the left and right speakers up off the floor to the lights and camera frame, so that from any seat you could see.
With the view from the overhead camera you could see the full fretboard and the pedals.
I think it was a needed improvement.

I'm glad to hear about the added closeup video and large screens. My last time there, about 9 years ago, my complaint/suggestion was that they ought to have just that setup, since so many of us want to see how things are played, but with the room and audience size, it's all but impossible. Good going, Scotty and crew!

The projection of the top of the steel was cool. I noticed that BE played almost an entire solo with both feet on the pedals. I found myself mostly concentrating on the screen.
[This message was edited by Billy Wilson on 05 September 2006 at 11:32 PM.]

I guess the only thing I can comment on is that there was stuff going on all over the place..not just the big stage.

Down in the Fulawaka room, Steve Pittico and the South Mountain band was blazing away on the Tele with John Cody Carter singing and Billy Phelps on Steel..also joining them was Tim Harr and Sarah Jory..This was a HOT PICKIN room..straight ahead Country music at meter..

The Derby room, same thing , jams..
The Zum room, same thing and also we had a chance to listen to Bruce talk about the Steels he built for many folks..including Buddy..

The GFI room, we had Mike Sigler jamming it seemed for hours..Speed Pickin the bluegrass tunes at warp speed and just having a grand old time..can we all please say ZONE together...

The McKoy brothers ( Tele and Steel) played throught the show in the bar, the open lounge, the Fulawaka room etc..

Mike Brown had many special things gpoing on which included Sarah Jory, and several sets featuring amazing players..

The MSA room had David Wright , Reece and many others, amoung them J D Manness..

The Jazz room had..well you already know about that.

the Carter Booth had Steels set up and all sorts of players walked in and out , sat and played for the entire show...and John had all of theose custom body Steels there for everyone to see...

Sunday morning church service had Fred Justice..good grief..and Doug Jernigan..if you have never heard Fred play..well..ya need to...

My opinion is that this was the best St Louis show I have attended, I think 5 or 6 total.

There was a buzz of activity pretty much everywhere, all of the vendor booths all of the rooms and the big stage too.

Fri night the big room shut down at 1:00 then it was off to the Sarah Jory show..Sat night the big room shut down at about 1:30...

The activity of seeing and talking to friends was just an added attraction to this event...

Even the elevators were not that bad this year !

What was new ?

The energy level was up a power of ten or 20...the BUZZ factor..

Next year..I'm dragging my stuff with me and I am gonna participate in the late night hang out jams...and I'm going to see if I can play on the Thursday lineup along with Roger, Larry and the rest of the gang...

I think it's impossible to answer the question or get a read of what was going on from SteelRadio.com..as good a job as they did..

There was lots of stuff in the vendor booths..gadgets, trinkets..not sure if it was new or not..but it was there...

I did come honme with a small Steel Guitar pin that lights up..thats new to me !

The new set-up for the PA speakers and the new light bar was an improvement althouogh I think it should have multi colored gells so as to enhance the stage more. A spotlight from the sound booth or higher would really be a serious enhancement. Perhaps a remote control spotlight overhead would be the answer.

yes, the sound system was better, the light rack, and there was a large screen TV on both sides of the stage with overhead shots of the players...

Hall of fame inductee Tom Bradshaw showed up with his new Webb Amps. After Jim Webb died Tom aquired the company and is making them again. I believe it was Mike Sigler who played through one of them on the main stage. Sounded excellent!!

Mike, I am so glad to hear that. I just talked with Mark Giles of Star, and he says my new SD-10 will be ready in about 30 days. Man, I can't wait to see it. We're planning on having it at the Mesa show in January.

There was a lap steel with pedals mounted on a contraption that looked like an exercise bike.

We built the "lap steel with pedals mounted on a contraption that looked like an exercise bike" for the health conscience pickers lol.

That little protype got a lot of attention... that may not be a good thing lol.
