Us northern Indiana boys got some talent. I just haven't figured out what my talent is yet. Ha!

Incredible clip! Seems so effortless, too...

You all might want to catch him "Live" at the St. Louis convention over Labor day weekend. Buddy will open Friday night and likely play again Saturday afternoon.

(Take lots of pictures, because I can't be there because of prior commitments.)

That was in the summer of '86.

Scotty arranged for Buddy to come in and conduct a teaching seminar on a Saturday and play on the day after, all at the Clarion Hotel (now Regal Riverfront), where the ISGC is held.

Bobby Caldwell was on guitar, John DiMartino on drums and I was on bass.

As I recall, there was other bar-spinning going that day, perhaps Scotty can fill us in . . . Image

I have the video that Buddy does that playing on. I love to show it to other musicians. It just blows their mind, since a steel guitar is strictly a country music instrument. Yeah right. I have always been an Emmons fan and as much as I love his playing, his tone grabs my attention even more. Buddy just proves this instrument can cross over to several different styles of music, at least he can do it. I saw something similar at the Texas show this year with Paul Franklin. Those guys make me leave shaking my head and wanting more.

It's hard to add anything more that hasn't already been said about Buddy except to say that I can't help but think how lucky we all are to be living in a time where he is still with us, doing what he does best that brings such happiness to us all.

I only wish we could see him more often.

Is the DVD the "Steel Guitar Classics Volume 1" from June 8, 1986?

I first met and heard Buddy in 1985 in Toronto at a convention organized by Al Brisco.
He played and looked just like this video.
Outstanding and a true inspiration.
An honor to be in the man's presence. I did have the opportunity to play with him on that occasion also. Unforgettable!
The "twirl" of the steel is amazing. No sour notes.
Long may he live and play for us.

That's Buddy.! No Doubt about it. I first met Buddy in 1976 where Scotty had his convention in St.Charles.

It was in Reece's Suite, who I knew since 1968. I was playing an old big band tune on Reece's Bb6 S12 and trying it out. It wasn't country. Buddy stuck his head out of the other room and said," Who is that?, " and Reece Said "Oh, that's just Al Marcus fooling around".

I'll always remember that, two fine gentelmen and great steel guitarists.

On that Video, Buddy knows where every note is on that guitar and his bar technique is the best I have ever seen or ever will..al Image

I think I figured out his secret: the notes are actually on the bar instead of on the guitar! Sheesh! It's been, like, staring me in the face for years... Image

He's Mr. Emmons to me! And he always has been! I think he's been playin' a day or two!

THanks for sharing and GOD bless Ya Mr. Emmons!

Does anyone know what recording device Buddy used back then, and how did he use the switch?

Is there a digital equivalent of that recording device on the market now?

Peter;

The recording was the "hold" feature on the delay he was using. He had a footswitch on the floor. He just had to time the chord change with the delay repeat, turning it off when the new chord starts and back on again for the repeats of the new chord. It's tricky, but if you can get the timing it's pretty cool.

When all that rack MXR stuff came out, (Pitch Transposer/Flanger Doubler/Digital Delay) I just had to get them and set it up the same way. Made for some really fun stuff. If you listen to Buddy's "Plus Nine (minus three)" on the "One for the Road" album to hear some of the sounds the system made. The tune is Buddy playing with his toys. Gotta love it!

Is there a way to digitally enhance the video quality of that clip? Is that performance actually on the "Steel Guitar Classics" DVD? Or is this from Jim West's private collection?
