steel clips after 2 years

Post by Jim Peters »

Ok guys, I got the nerve up to post a short clip. This is a live clip from 3 weeks ago. It represents what I can do after barely 2 years of playing. Here it is in all its unedited glory, warts and all:
http://www.swirlband.com/songs.html

Goto the last clip. Check out the Christmas songs whle you're there. Comments are most welcome, but hit me nice!!! JimP

Finally I get to hear you. That's some real workingman's steel. I'll have to cop some of your licks, you know.

I should add that the gig was with Tom Wood, a local singer songwriter, not Swirl, my band with my wife. JP

Play when the singer isn't singing.
It makes for a more pleasurable listening experience, and you'll get more gigs.

I don't agree. I'm in an award winning country rock band booked a year in advance. Opened for 13 Nashville acts this year. I play when the singer is singing sometimes. Not all the time though. I usually opt for answering the singer if I can. Jim, you sound just fine. I can relate alot to your playing and I know what you are trying to do. You are coming along nicely.
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 17 December 2005 at 11:46 PM.]

Jim,
It's not a personal attack, just a post that could be construed to be worded too harshly.

I only ever give constructive criticism.

If you heed my advice in my previous post, in years to come you will see the wisdom of it,
and might even offer the same advice to other aspiring players.
Peace,
R B

Hey, for only two years of playing, I only wish I could play so good. I enjoyed it.

Normally I would whole heartedly agree.. not playing while the singer is singing or filling in "tastefully" around the singers phrasing is essential.
But in this case ..i'm not so sure. We're talking about the New Riders of the Purple Sage ... The steel is always dominant and out front.. It's their signature .
Keeping that in mind I thought you did a great job..I dont feel you overplayed at all.
Especially, for a steel dominated song like Garden of Eden. And considering you have only been playing two years.. way to go!

Jim, I can relate. I'm just hitting my 2 year mark also. Your playing sounds very good. I'm also working with a band and having a blast. All suggestions given in a positive way (as Richards was) are worth paying attention to. The followups were also good. Keep up the good work you've been doing.

Jim, I see you use the same equipment as I do also. GFI keyless, N112, and I even use my MD recorder sometimes at gigs.

Nice playing! There's hope! I just started a couple of months ago and I hope to sound as good as you in two years! I'm coming along though.

Nice job!

Jim, good job. That really makes me feel like I should hang it up. I have been trying to play longer than you have and don't sound that good.
