I was saying just the other day, I can't wait to see all the SGF posts about the CMA Show. Nothing like an Awards show to stir things up 'round here HeHe!!!!

Steve, you are 100% correct. I hear a whole bunch more Paul than Jerry. It is about time the CMA recognizes Paul Franklin and introduces him to people other than us PSG freaks. Besides Jerry's already won. Who knows, next year it could be a drummer or a bass player, they deserve recognition also.

The whole thing was a bit sad, as I've worn out all the other, more acerbic, comments I've made at various times, to my wife's continuing misery.

I do hand it, though, to "Vinny" Gill for his well-done Brooklynese.

I was disappointed when the steel player took a ride on "Help me Make it thru the Nite" and the mic was turned off.

I could hear it loud and clear as well. My eyes welled up, the solo was that good.

Jeremy, that was Keith Urban who gave the well deserved recognition to all road players.
Although I would have enjoyed the dobro backing to Brad's song, I thought the solo format was great, super guitar backing that complemented the great vocals.

Butch,

Dierks thanked his road players too naming each one of them.

John,

I had a similar thing happen the other day. I was on our bus and watched the CMT Outlaws show and could hear Paul Franklin really good. I watched it again at home a few days later and couldn't hear a single note that he played. I don't know if it was a problem with my cable company or my TV. Go figure!

Sounds like when Clive Davis ordered a remix of the Poco album: erase that whiny thing!

Most of the time, I don't watch any awards shows. I was in a motel room last night and watched in a moment of weakness. There were good spots, some of which were named above.

But the influence of the record companies trying to de-countrify the performers and the award show was very apparent. Witness:

- What the heck was Bon Jovi doing there? His performance and material were weak. I've heard better at the local bars.

- Couldn't Alan Jackson have sung a country song? "Wonderful Tonight" was outdated and corny 20 years ago. Geeeeez.

- Elton John and Dolly had no chemistry whatsoever. The performance was weak.

The show belongs in Nashville on CMT or GAC.

I'm still not sure why it matters where the electronic noise I pump (voluntarily or not) into my living room comes from.

I wish I could hear the performance with Willie Nelson, Nora Jones, and Paul Simon just once more. Seems like Ms. Jones was having a bad time finding the right notes to play and the sustain pedal got stuck. These guys needed tracks and should've lip synced. Image
Gretchen Wilson didn't put on any airs and was truly herself, very nicely done I thought and you can tell she doesn't take it for granted. I heard a long time ago to never wear yellow or green on stage and that dress Womack had on sure proved it. All I can say is "think black!"

Where was Kid Rock when you needed him? It's hard to imagine he was too drunk to perform, as that's never stopped him before.... I fell asleep from all the overstimulation just before the George Jones/Ozzy Osbourne duet on "Red River Valley." Did they rock?

I thought it was a great mix of old and new. Plenty of good Steel guitar. The price to get into the event was believe it or not, some paid over two grand a ticket.A far cry from someone paying 10 bucks to get in to hear us. There was something for everyone on last nights show.As a traditional Country fan I enjoyed it.It was in New York, It did have one of its highest ratings ever.I guess next years show will be in Nashville again.Wonder if there is enough Country fans there to pull of a Country show? Imageand get 2000 at the door?

Joe, I think when a show of this type tries (in this case, too hard) to be all things to all people, it fails for the obvious reason -lack of integrity. It succeded in propping up it's ratings though, which had been sagging like Dolly's boobs - and THAT is what it was all about ....

Although there was more country than in recent years, it's still, at best, a 3-hour commercial. Willie and Nora looked like neither one knew where the other was going. (Who was following who? Image ) The duo with Dolly and Elton was pretty weird, wasn't it? Elton is great, but he was clearly out of his element. Dolly did what she could. I guess that was a kind of yin-and-yang thing. "Imagine" might be a cool song...but on a country awards show? Geeze! Gimme a break!

On the plus side, there was some good steel playing evident, and some good "face time" for a couple of steelers. The bullcrap "video pinball machine" graphics on the big screens was distracting, and seemed childish. But hey, I guess that's what the young people are queer for nowadays. There was plenty of glitz (New Yawkers' like glitz), and enough rock-stuff to satisfy the younger crowd. I guess there was something for everyone, but putting up with all the "political" crap to hear a few good songs got old real fast.

Can't we do an awards show without making some kind of "statement"?

I guess not. Image

What? $2,000 a ticket??? You couldn't pay me enough to be a part of that "circus"!

Like I said. The whole thing seemed to emphasize commercialism, and not the music.

Praise God for Austin City Limits.

It's probably the last real "music show" on TV. Enjoy it while you can.

Thanks to each of you for your input to this discussion. So far we have had responses from 22 states and one country outside the U.S. The group includes Texas, Tennessee, Minnesota, Washington, Indiana, Arizona, Kentucky, Alabama, California, Utah, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, Maryland, Canada, New Mexico, Virginia, New York, Colorado, New Jersey, and Florida. Most opinions expressed so far have tend to be of the belief that the show could be improved. We'll just have to wait until next year and see where the latest commercial trends are directing the herd.
