Maurice Anderson
Last night I was listening to a cd of Mark O’Connor entitled, ‘Heroes’. One of the cuts, ‘Fiddlin’ Around’, was with Johnny Gimble. The cut featured solos by Maurice Anderson and Eldon Shamblin. I fetched out my other Gimble albums which featured Maurice and gave them a spin. I especially liked the album, ‘Glorybound’. Maurice played such nice stuff on it. Actually, I really enjoy his playing on everything I have by him – The Many Moods series, Sextet Sessions, Universal Direction, etc. He has such incredible taste. If I had to choose a favorite of the albums he has cut, I would probably say Universal Direction although that is a hard choice and one that I don’t have to make. I have a few tapes made of Jimmy Boen’s steel guitar shows in Fort Smith, AR which featured Maurice that I watch rather frequently. Jimmy held Maurice in high regard and featured him prominently on his show. Not only is his pedal steel playing out of this world, he plays the 12 string lap steel Jimmy built for him as though it were his main instrument…. I email Maurice on occasion bugging him to make some new records. Anything would be great; however, like most listener’s, I have a few things I would like to have by him. There are several religious songs I would like to hear him play. I would like to hear his interpretation of some Christmas music. Anything actually – I am not THAT picky. Perhaps someday soon the notion to record again will strike him full force….

Hey Randy,
Fiddlin around is a great record. Have you heard Johnny Gimble's "Texas Dance Party".
It is a live recording featuring Maurice and Johnny's band (the Bosque Bandits).
It is still one of the best "western swing"
records I ever heard. Maurice's sound
is just so awesome. Think I'll have to listen to it again now.
Regards,
Bob

I must agree with all that's been said about Reece's playing!! I haven't heard all his recordings, but all I've heard are just awesome!!
As flawless & tasteful as his playing is though....it still takes a back seat to the character of the man himself, which I personally hold as high as anyone I know!

Johnny Gimble's "Texas Dance Party" has always been one of my favorite LPs.
By the way, the new "Out Of Nowhere" CD is available from the Forum Catalog. Great straight ahead jazz playing from Jim and Reece.

Jim-Right on! I have it and Reece and Jim both do a fine job on the CD. I like those old standards.
I played "Out of Nowhere" in 1948 on my old Gibson 6 pedal 8 string Electra-Harp in Northern Michigan many a night. But I didnt jazz it up like they did, Wow!...al

Reece has not only got astonishing technique but his musical knowledge is very high.
He is a very correct player harmony-wise and is an original stylist preferring not to go down the safe route of the standard E9/C6 combination.
He certainly has a number of admirers over here in the UK. He blew me away with his live playing in the '70's, and I don't think that any recording has ever fully captured the dynamic and free flow performance that he generates live.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for your encouragement and kind words throughout my entire playing career.
Every step of the way you provided me the inspiration to continue doing what I felt God intended me to do.
You have all truly blessed my life, and the thought I possibility brought joy and happiness to others along the way, is a blessing I will cheerish forever.
