It's a category '5'now, Farris, very strong and building up more as Katrina aims for the gulfcoast. My prayers for safe haven and high ground to all residents in the path of this one. I weathered one in my younger days off Okinawa, very strong like this--only called them Typhoons. No easy task! JZ

We won't need to pray for them; if they would just get the Hell outta there like their Suppose to.
Anyone sittin' around wanting to ride this storm out; is asking for some serious trouble....>LEAVE!!!! and Leave NOW.

I agree with Ricky. I had a cousin who stayed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast during Camille in '69 "for the experience." She was lucky and lived through it - others didn't. A major huricane is a force of nature, and not particularly good entertainment. The other set of characters that provide fodder for Darwinian evolution in huricanes is the old codgers who have lived through one or more low level huricanes, and think they have seen it all - then comes the big one that wipes them out. It's always better to evacuate and discover you didn't need to, than to not evacuate and discover you should have. Image

Farris, I know I speak for others in this area to thank you and the other forum members for your prayers and concerns. Looks like this storm may cost me a trip to St. Louis but I hope that will be all. I have been through Betsy, Andrew, Audrey, and my wife was in Pasgagoula during Cammille. However this one looks to be about as bad as we've seen.

thanks

Has anybody heard if Bill Stafford is all right? I don't think I could take losing another great steeler this year, it has been a tough one. Hal, Jerry, Winnie, Ed Naylor...

I do hope he's okay.

Looked like a bad one from the TV here, couldn't understand the words,
but pics were more than enough.

I have rode out a small hurricane on Cape Cod, 120mph winds to 150mph gusts,
and the only thing to do with a Catagory 5 is get moving ASAP.
No other logical choice...

I hope ALL there, and our steeler buddies and families get through it OK.
[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 30 August 2005 at 08:16 AM.]

I just got an email from Dave Easley, who rode it out in Atlanta. He's still trying to get a call in to see if he has a house or anything else left. I was living in Miami when Andrew went through in 1992 - having been in the eye of a category 5 hurricane is something I'll treasure for the rest of my life (kookoo, kookoo), but I wouldn't do it twice, not by choice. Besides, Miami is built on solid coral, south Louisiana is built on silt & muck & gator poop. 60 foot cabin cruisers flying through the air is one thing, but when they start sucking the ground out from underneath you - oooh.

Baton Rouge dodged a large bullet this time. Unfortunately any area south and east of us didn't fare as well. As I understand it just about everything south of I-20 from east La. to east Alabama has been effected. I'm very concerned about anyone, especially our steel community all thoughout this area. It may take a while to find out about everyone as phone & electrical service is patchy at best. New Orleans and the Miss-Ala coast was very nearly destroyed with many fatalities. This was a big hit.

Has anyone heard from Bill Stafford? I read where Gulfport was more or less destroyed, I thought that was where he lived these days.

Any update would be appreciated.

I am making a donation to the Red Cross later today, what else can I do here in New York?

My Wife's Family: Mother and Father and Grandmother are in Laurel, Missippi. What little news we can get is that it has been hit hard. 1000 homes destroyed. We cannot get through to them and are worried sick! If any southeastern Mississppi steelers are online and can give a report about the region I would be grateful...

Hey--So far no one mentioned Hank Corwin. His last job was with Porter, and before that, Jim Ed. His home WAS in D'lberville, MS, which is next to Gulfport & Biloxi. His voicemail picked up on sunday night, so I guess he must have left the area. I sure would like to know if he & Barbie are safe.
We're praying for safety for him and for the others as well.
