I'm not sure that these pieces can be judged by the poor quality of the amazon samples. Daniel is an amazing producer and frankly I'd be curious to hear anything he did on an extended pedal steel album. Any reviews from someone how actually owns the album?

The major PHiladelphia paper gave it 3 stars (out fo 4). They called it "Eno-esque", refering to his former partner, Brian Eno. The review sums it up

Belladonna is quiet but not passive, meditative but not unfocused, nocturnal but not soporific.

I'll probably get a copy to have around as background or mood music. It doesn't sound like something I would just sit and listen to.

I actually expect to pick up a copy eventually myself, when the hard-driver's leftovers dribble down to Ebay. I do like to hear a different take on things, and I listen to Slider and Uma often enough. I'm still saving up for the new Cowboy Troy right now.

People are still talking about Daniel Lanlois' appearance at the Ottawa Blues Festival two years ago. He stunned everyone.

Lanois does interesting stuff - very unique and talented dude.

Some great personnel on this album! Brian Blade (drummer and bandleader that steeler Dave Easley has played with) and Brad Mehldau (piano) are awesome...

Daniel Lanois music is great. Also, I wish to mention, this webpage of Hook Moore is outstanding. He is plays one the best, tastiest steels in the business today. Great Job Hook....Keep up the great work...

I heard him on a venue a couple of years ago. Sho-Bud, into a delay through an over-driven AC-30. The sound coming out of that amp was spectacular, didn't matter what he was playing.

I saw Daniel Lanois play solo and with Emmylou Harris at the Sundance Film Festival a while ago. His guitar playing was very unorthodox and sounded amazing. His pedal steel playing was equally unorthodox and cool sounding. It's nothing that fans of only trad. steel technique will like, but if you can appreciate an oddball approach with unusual voicings and textures, it's worth checking out for that alone.

I read that one of his earliest gigs was playing pedal-steel for Raffi.

Classic example of the Pedal Steel being used for something that it is NOT supposed to be used for according to the pedal steel police.

I will make a point of buying this CD just for that reason.

In this vein, if you have the stomach for experimental jazz/improv stuff, by all means --- get Brian Blade Fellowship's "Perceptual"... our fellow steeler Dave Easley is all over it, and Daniel Lanois is on some acoustic guitar and steel also... And Joni Mitchell even lends some vocals.

Giorgio, the original post has a link where you can hear some sample clips. It's not solo steel, but is a group mix that prominently features pedal steel. I would call it New Age Music with a Southwestern twist. [This message was edited by David Doggett on 31 July 2005 at 10:24 PM.]
