Is your wife a ---

Post by Gary Preston »

I would like to say that my wife has been the '' best helper '' that i could have asked for when learning something new on pedal steel. She has always been the first to say if the new material sounds good or bad . I'm thankful for an honest woman that will put up with someone learning a new something without closing the music room door . But after i learn the new material she then closes the door . How about you can you say the same ? This should be fun . thanks to all who are brave enought to reply . Best regards,,,Gary . P.S.I hope this is the right place for this .

My wife has very different musical taste than I do...we share some stuff but not everything by a long shot. I would never let her (or anybody else for that matter) be the arbiter of my musicianship!

My wife actually surprised me with my first steel guitar for my birthday many years ago and I never even indicated to her that I even had the slightest interest in one (and I didn't)! Being a guitar/mandolin player she just thought I might like one and I sure acted like it was a wonderful gift. I never imagined that it would be so intoxicating!

My wife of 50 years this year has always supported me and my playing. I no longer play in clubs, which she always went with me, but I do play for alzheimer units and rehabilitation units 2 and 3 times a week and she is always there with me. She loves my music and if I would play all the time for her at home she insists that it would make her very happy. Could someone ask for anything more. I have one person who considers me the best, but of course I know different, but it is sure encouraging.
I hope that this doesn't sound like I am bragging, but it sure makes me feel very fortunate!

My wife isn't fond of steel guitar unless Buddy is playing it. Nope, not even my playing unless I squeeze out some B.E. licks and tunes. But, it had better be #$^&# accurate!
She's usually into classic rock or blues. She even gave up on going to the ISGC.

My wife is the best! She supports my playing and practicing. At any gigs that I play, she sets-up and tears-down the guitar for me. I got it made! Image

Yeah, but how many of you have wives that would buy you a D10 8+4, then buy you a Nash 1000, then have a new pedal steel custom built to your specifications, then buy you a Hilton pedal, then buy you an amp stand, then buy you a Nash 112 -- and, on top of all that, go with you to every steel show you can make, and load and unload all of it for you?

No, she doesn't have a sister.

My wife is a blues and Gospel singer. She's bought me some great guitars and supports me 100%. She hasn't quite warmed up to the steel yet, but she loves my piano, organ and guitar playin'. She's my best friend and we make great music together. What more could a fella ask for?

My wife is a.........

Banjo picker!!!!!!!!

Actually, she is the one that convinced me to try the PSG, because she knows how I always loved them. She has also agreed to try and teach me a few things. Only problem is....she keeps insisting on me only using 5 strings...go figure Image

My wife became so accustomed to me playing harmonicas that she did not really appreciate the screeching and terrible sounds that I could get out of my steel when I first got it. In fact, I was relegated to the basement for the first three weeks because all I did was sit and practice single string picking until I could run the strings from one end of the neck to the other without having to look where my hands were.

Now that I have progressed to actually playing tunes, she has started to request songs for me to learn. She says that the steel is the saddest instrument she has ever heard.

My wife is an amazing musician and performer, and she had definitely helped me find my voice as a writer and performer. She has that ability to not only to impress an audience, but to take them with her, to take them for a ride. She has been invaluable to me as I have embarked on doing gigs under my own name in many ways: song choice, song order within a set, what's working and what's not.

That said, she's not a fan of the steel guitar (particularly the pedal steel) so there is definitely a lot of music I just keep to myself. She also thinks that us steel players take each other way to seriously, and are rediculously long winded (she follows the forum from time to time to get a good laugh).

You are a lucky man, having someone
to bring you breakfast in bed and
bring your dinner to you while you
are on the computer. Knowing how she
makes all those nice covers while you
get all the credit.
Yep, you are a lucky guy! aaiigghhtt.

To be BRUTALLY honest, my wife could care less if I play it ever again.. NEVER showed any interest at all. She does come around with her hand out when I come home with gig money however.

I am allowed NO money for musical gear except what I earn on gigs [I get half, she gets half]..that includes strings, picks etc. I also can't use "house" money for gas to GET to gigs.. Typically I need to sell gear to buy more, and save up for long periods. Soooo, has she been supportive?? You be the judge. I envy you guys that have wives that take an interest in your playing.

We do have something musical in common. We are both in our church praise team.. She sings fairly well, and I play guitar and sing. She has NO interest in music AT ALL,other than Christian songs and the church singing...Hey, I like Christian music too, but man I could use just a bit more backup here at the homestead... bob

My wonderful wife (Lisa) of 25 years thinks I am better than Buddy Emmons! She has been to almost any gig or show I have ever played, and helps load and unload equipment. Top that! Image

She is....
but I don't have to live with it anymore.

She only liked 1 piece of music I wrote in 8 years...
Only one!

I like classical but she only likes certain styles within classical, plus
Joe Cocker and Tuck and Patty.
Go figure.

When I took up the PSG, she couldn't have cared less, one way or another.

Each time I've felt like quitting this crazy music thing, my wife has been there to say "don't give it up. Keep playing gigs, just do ones that are fun."

Though I didn't want to go, she convinced me to attend a Johnny Bush dance with her, which led to my meeting Johnny, being a Bandolero for 13 years now, as well as having Johnny and Lynda Bush become two of the closest friends we have.

After I left the newspaper in 1998, having been offered and accepting a "golden handshake" somewhat reluctantly, I bass fished for a year while unknowingly suffering through low-level post-job depression. I then woke up and decided I needed to get back to full-time work.

I told my wife "it's time to look for another advertising or publishing job." She said "why don't you go back into music full-time? It's what you love, and we can just tighten the belt a little bit until you get rolling."

This is one fine woman I married. Image

When I play along with Band in a Box, my wife sits at her computer right behind me. The only time she complains is when I stop. Once in a while she tells me something sounds off, but mostly she likes every thing I play. For Christmas she bought me a Peterson tuner, a DD-3, a cheapie lap steel, and not long ago an Ibanez arch top. My birthday is less then two weeks, I've been showing her Pics of new steels but it probably won't work. Love her to pieces.

My wife has supported my music addiction for all of the 25 years we've been together. I've been teaching her electric bass guitar lately and she is really getting into it. The bass is a great instrument to accompany the PSG. We're having fun.

My wife doesn't like country music and she doesn't like steel, but she lets me do what I want to do.
If I would come home with a new steel she wouldn't complain.
But asking for her opinion about a song is useless.

I have been playing for 3 months(so you can imagine how painful it must be for my wife and family)but they are all really supportive. My wife even listens to music she doesn.t really like to see if she can pick out the steel licks. At age 53 I think she is just happy to have something I like to keep me around for when she needs stuff done around the house.
