How many of you have pseudonyms, or stage monikers? How many of you have played with those that did? I know there are a lot out there, and it's pretty hilarious to me when the real and fake name are compared. Some folks are born with "cool" names, and others invent them. Some just abide. Anyone?

I guess I had an inadvertant one. A guitar player I met in 1974 got my name wrong from the beginning. I thought it was just his way of pronouncing it.

For 25+ years we off and on worked for each other, competed against each other in our own bands and jammed together whenever we could find an excuse.

I would call him up to sit in with my group, and he would call me up with his.

All those years I was Kenny Lane according to his understanding. We finally got it straight a couple of years ago.

You know the old saying, "Call me what you want as long as you call me for supper."

I (obviously) don't have a pseudonym but I recall that, as a kid, I used to fantasize about being a famous singer, and decided that I would need a stage name, so I chose: "James Taylor" ! Well, this was looong before anybody had heard of that James Taylor. Oh, well, I never got famous enough to look for a backup, so I guess I'll just stay "Jimbeaux, the Master of Acceptable Tone".

<font size=1> Footnote: another recollection from my childhood, when I was a kid, my parents used to call me "Jimbo". It was only years later, here on the Forum, when folks discovered my hidden cajun heritage and changed the spelling accordingly <i>(You mean Grandpa Moishe married a CAJUN lady??) Image

In the late '70's my brother moved to Ottawa, Ontario and began fronting bands under the moniker "Hank Malone", as well as generally going by that name. By this time I was living in Ontario and gigging as a steel player fairly regulary. When his band was playing near Toronto and I was available I would work weekends with them, and plans were in the works for us to hook up full time. In order for us to milk the "brother" routine I needed a stage name that matched his. So one night on the phone, shortly before I was to join up with them in Peterborough, and under some pressure to come up with a name for me, we decided on "Dusty" - the source for that name was a character in the "Dallas" soap opera that the Sue Ellen character was messing around with. So I became Dusty Malone. To this day, he and I call one another Hank and Dusty, and the former members of that particular band tend to do so as well. "Hank" gave up his stage name around the time he had to admit to his then-girlfriend (who he has now been married to for over twenty years) that he was not really Hank Malone, but rather was Rick Blair. I never used mine extensively - only when we needed to be Hank and Dusty - but between us the names have kind of stuck.

I worked in one band which consisted of 4 guys and a girl singer. We all had beards except for our female. We were known as "The Beard Brothers & Maw".....We'd always go by our first names and Beard as our last names during band introductions. One night an idiot came up and yelled "Which one's Maw?" to which the drummer (6'6", 265 lbs.) said "I am, what's it to you?". The guy went back to his seat but I thought it was funny myself........JH

In my high school theatre days, I could have been "Backstage"
For the past few weeks, I've been playing without my left thumb after surgery following a skiing fall, I could be "Incomplete"
(anyone else ever had to use 3 fingers to hold the bar? not elegant, but beats sitting home)
Back in my single days, some ladies could have called me "Forward" (or "Unsuccessful")
Fortunately, to my wife, I'm "Complete"
If I ever get divorced, I'll be "Free"

ok, I suppose that's enough....

For a while, I was known as "Wichita", as were, I guess, a lot of guitar players, after the "Lester Roadhog" invasion.

In my literary life, it's Rick Hewart* but when it comes to steel guitar I just try to trade on my initials. If that doesn't work:

Joaquin Wounded
