Young steelers carrying on!

Post by Bobby Flores »

I met two young steelers while working a gig in Houston a couple of days ago, Justin Griffith and Michael Barnnett (hope I got the names exactly right guys). Jim Loessberg was working with us that night.

I mainly just wanted to say how exciting it was for us to talk with those two young men about steels and steel playing. It's great to know there are some younger folks out there carrying the torch and seriously studying the great steelers of our day.

I wonder how many other young players there are out there that are seriously into steel? Please respond if you want to and may the force be with you!

Hey Bobby, very cool,
I suspect there is a bit of a renaisaence of steel happening,
but just not in the markets most of the older steelers are familiar with.

Merry Christmas to you and all the cats I met at ISGC.

Russ I think you know me. Do you remember a speaker cabnet falling off a table and almost hitting you at the Broken Spoke in Austin?
That was me who was running Monitors that night. I was also the one who tied the mains down and said "oh hell they'll be fine"
Sorry again Russ

Hey Justin...how could I forget...apparently I didn't realize how close it came 'til some others told me about it....I hope to hear you play sometime...maybe Dallas? BTW, you need to figure out a way to beat Johnny Lyon out of that Sho-Bud single channel amp...I let one get away from me a couple of years ago. Image

Cody, I'd venture to say that 21 Definitely qualifies as young! What a great age to be taking on anything. Best of luck to you and hit it hard! We're counting on you!

I would love to be at the Steel Show in Arizona to hear those two, Jonathan and Austin. 10 and 12 years old? How cool is that!

Justin, see you at the Cotton Club on Jan. 7th...Randy Reinhard on steel!

I was once one of the "young" guys, but not anymore.....

Don't blink...or you wont be one of the young ones anymore either!
[This message was edited by Gene Jones on 28 December 2004 at 01:15 PM.]

Yeah, it's Garnett, but don't worry about it. Hey, good meeting y'all as well. It's always a pleasure to hear Jim play, and I'll make it a point to hear you whenever you get around the area. I'm back out in West Texas, it was nice to see some of the old gang, but stuff's gotta get done out here.

As for the young guy comment, I'll believe that, with some exceptions. I turned 25 in September and am buying a house tomorrow morning! I guess we're all getting older.

I just turned 20, 30 years ago! Does that count? Image And I wish I'd started playing steel 30 years ago instead of 2 years ago! But that's all right, it's all part of my plan to refuse to age!
Well Bobby F., My 18 year old is sure chompin' at the bit to hook up and get a few fiddle tips! He doesn't want to try steel yet. He's waiting to see if I'll survive first!
